Title: Somewhere new to try - Cania.
Post by: Pinhead on April 16, 2014, 06:24:05 PM: Going to head over there in a couple of weeks. Early mark on the friday arvo..hour and a bit drive and set up camp. Hopefully out early for a fish on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Am open to every tip about the place available.

Post by: Sweetwater on April 16, 2014, 11:14:49 PM: I used to fish Cania Dam probably 6 or 8 times a year, I loved the place. But haven't been there for a while now. I was a bit disappointed when after maybe 4 or 5 attempts they got snub nosed gar to take in there. Was a great fly / surface fishery & I guess it still is a good fishery, but it took some of the shine off it with gar there giving false surface activity.

I always enjoyed fishing from Potters Point up as far as you can go. Current level is 93% so you should get to the sticks ok & the boat ramp should have plenty of water on it.

Could nearly always get some sartoga on spinnerbaits if you're not into fluff chuckin'. It goes ok for bass and yellowbelly, but living right next to some of Qld's best bass and yella fisheries I hardly bothered fishing for the "same old same old" when going to Cania, Saratoga were always my main target.

Can be a great night fishery (except for the gar flicking about at night) but the phantom gnats can and will swarm to any light by the millions, so be prepared to fish with zero lights on apart from the anchor light / nav lights.

BTW- the gorge is worth a look at the National Park, you drive right past it to get to the lake.
