NEWS
Brrrrr. Bring on summer please!
This morning was freezing with even flakes of snow in the mountains and with the wind and showers from the south, it was very uncomfortable on the water.
It looks like a week of cold nights and warm days but this is not going to help the river fishing very much and the dry fly fishing season continues to be very late.
The lake is still the best place to catch a trout with the shore based angling on Lake Jindabyne the best way to catch a trout at the moment, with trout still caught trout around the edges. Bait anglers are still doing the best but lure anglers are certainly catching some good rainbows in sheltered bays early in the morning before sunrise or after dark. Lake trollers are experiencing a slow period and the best way to catch a trout is to spread out lines at different depths and be patient.
If you want the VERY latest daily updates you will need to check out check out reports on Facebook.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATURE
The lake level is at 91% and is rising. The temperature today was 15 degrees C.
Best methods to catch a trout.
Best method – Bait off the shore is still the best way to catch a trout.
Best lake lure –Strike Tiger Plastics and Jointed Rapalas.
Best lake area – All the western bays are holding fish.
Best fly method lake – Yabby Patterns and Williamson’s Goldfish.
Best River Fly Fishing– Nymphs either black or brown maybe a caddis pattern late in the day.
Best River Lures – Jointed Rapalas and Vibrax Glow spinners.

Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next few weeks.
Trolling.
As reported earlier the trolling has still been a little slow and the best way to catch a trout is to spread out lines at different depths and be patient. I am sure that with the sunny days we will see some insect hatches that will bring the trout back on the surface to feed early in the day and that might pick up the surface fishing.
The water temperature is now getting into trout comfort zone and that will also get them on the move again.
Target rocky points and other snags like the many trees in the water at the moment.
Try lead line at 2 to 3 colours. (20 to 30 metres of line out) later in the day or on still days.
Best colour Tassies have been green and gold (Willy’s Special) yellowing type Tassies at the moment, maybe Y82, Holographic or Brown Bomber as well. The new Tassie colours have arrived in my shop and we are expecting a few of these to become very popular. Rapalas like the Brook Trout pattern of Perch pattern have still been very successful.
We have a new range of the Salmo lures now also in stock and these are going quite well also.
We are also getting a little positive feedback on the Dorado minnows that are new to our range.
Little bit of downrigging at 20 feet on the bright sunny days. Use longer dropbacks for best results.

Lake Bait Fishing
(Primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you first check with the Department of Industry and Investment NSW (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers in the area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAIT FISH in the RIVERS!)
Shore based bait fishing continues to be good with local Scrubbies, bardi grubs and artificial baits the best. The fish are coming in very close and you can catch them at any time of the day if you are patient. Mudeyes are working at the moment but are very difficult to get local mudeyes as the weather has been too cold and supplies are limited. The fish are hungry – you just need to present the bait as natural as you can!

Lake Spinning
Blades in gold have been doing well at the moment later in the day in deeper water. Try a Strike Pro Cyber Vibe 50 or a TT Switchblade Sunset Gold. The Tasmanian Devil ‘Willy’s Special’, Holographic, Y82 and Y48 as well as reports of white Tassies catching trout also in deeper water.
Minnow lures like floating Rapalas, (especially jointed Rapalas), Stumpjumpers and other minnow style lure in either natural rainbow trout and brown trout patterns or gold colours to represent the Jindabyne goldfish that the trout love to chase and eat.
Don’t stay in one place too long and only put in a couple of casts in each area.
Call into my shop and I will show you some of the better soft plastics that we are having great success on over the last week. The ‘Spotted Brew’ Strike Tiger has especially been good over the last week.

River Spinning.
The water in the Thredbo is now lower and clear and the fish can be quite spooky.
The best fishing looks like up higher near The Diggings and although we are seeing fish at Paddy’s Corner and lower down they are very spooky and look like they are moving to higher waters.
Try the Vibrax Glow lures in the very early hours and after sunset for good results in the running water.
Jointed Rapalas also worked slowly through the pools are well worth a try.
In the faster water, CD Rapalas will be worth a throw but if you need to get down deep then maybe metal blades will help cut the fast flow and they work very well against fast flowing currents. Drift rigging with nymphs in the faster runs will also be effective. Don’t forget the soft plastics and the Strike Tiger range in pink and orange might just work well first up but in fast water a heavier jig head will be needed.

Fly Fishing Lake
Most of the fly fishing on the lake last week has still been with bigger wet flies. There are fish being caught so it’s definitely worth while wetting a line. Black or olive Woolley Bugger, a Craig’s Night time or a Williamson’s Goldfish will be worth using.
The shallow bays on the lake are worth a try but you have to be very quiet and not too many casts in one spot so as not to spook the trout.

Fly fishing Rivers and Streams
As reported earlier, the last few days have been colder and we will wait for some warm sunny weather to stir the bugs up and get the fish back on the bite.
Nymphs, either olive or black will be the best in the faster water. Hopefully with some warmer weather we might see some insect hatches and a little dry fly fishing.

For visitors to the Snowy’s we have a full range of fishing tackle for hire at my shop and fishing tours are now available.

Have you any photos that you can e-mail me?
