Title: Forkies vs Bass.
Post by: rayke1938 on May 07, 2011, 04:01:32 PM
Do bass eat juvenile forkies?
Do forkies eat juvenile bass?
Or do they just co-exist side by side.
We have been catching a few forkies for the first time in NPD over the last 3 years in the 30 to 60cm size but on autopsy they all appear to be around 12 years old; I havent heard of any small ones being caught or electrofished so why are they not exploding like they have in other dams?Do the bass just eat all the juveniles ?
 Cheers
Ray

Excellent question ray, from what i have heard NPD does not have the gravel beds to support the forkies but better suited to support red claw which I'm sure you are well aware of! sounds like a long shot to me but does make some kind of sense to me.

Cheers

Do Bass eat juvenile Forkies ? probably despite the dorsal and pectoral spines every thing else eats them.
Do Forkies eat juvenile Bass ? if they can catch them, they are quick little buggers  :)
Here is a link which will save me a bit of typing www.fishbase.org/summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=22590
You will see there is a reference to a very old paper which states that they are the only species among oral incubating Ariids exhibiting no parental care.
Have caught 2 large ones that still had small juveniles in there mouth when landed ?
Pic is of a big one from the Dawson which had juvies in its mouth when landed.

cheers

I like Forkies can be a bit of a nuisance if you are specificly targeting Bass but they are after all a native naturally occuring fish.
Years ago before Bass were stocked when they were not that common even in rivers Forkies were a welcome bycatch when lure fishing for me.
Be great if they grew as large as the N. midgleyi that Dick gets over in the North West  :OMG
