Toonumbah
« on: November 17, 2012, 07:38:23 AM »
A mate and I went up to Toonumbah Dam west of Kyogle on Thursday, we got there a bit after luch and set up camp under some shady trees; it was about 33deg. Then about 1500hrs we put the boat in and went right up to the limits of the dam. The plan was to let the wind blow us back down. Things were a bit slow until about 1700 when it all went hot. We finished the evening right on dark having boated and released nearly 40 Bass, although there were quite a lot of small ones we still managed quite few into the high 30's and at least one 40. We went out the next morning at 0500 and the barometer had dropped. That morning we only got 6 fish. This just shows that being in the right place at the right time is important.
We used a mixture of lures, with softies fitted with a buzz blade being very successful. I did well with some hard body lures. We tried surface lures in the morning session but got only a few responses.

Nice work JD, thanks for the report.

Any idea on surface water temps from the afternoon session to the next morning?

G'DAy Fitzy, the water temps were 25DEg to 26, not a lot of variatio there. We were on the water pretty early but the temps were still fairly constant. The Barometer varied from 1008 in the Thursday arvo to about 990 the next day. Toonumbar is a pretty good little dam. It's stocked by the Kyogle Bass Club, and I intend to get in touch with those blokes to find out a bit more. I'll send you some pic'sd if you like
Cheers,
John
