High's and Low's on Ewen Maddock
« on: November 07, 2010, 06:47:47 AM »
G'day all,

Things are starting to look bright finally for the future of Ewen Maddock Dam after a very long period of not being stocked. We are hoping to place our first lot of fingerlings into the dam in late December or January.

There have been some great reports of some good sized Bass being caught however you'll have to work for them. The Toga have been active too with the warmer weather we've had in the last week or two with Josh (Fishbutler) bringing a 62cm model yak side last week on a surface popper.

On a bit of a downward note as we have been regularly fishing the dam, Tilapia have been showing up in numbers with a report from Josh and Ben at this months meeting informing us of an instance where they were fishing a small bay noticing approximately 200 Tilapia in a small area feeding on the surface.

On a brighter note which just excited me after being stuck behind a stall at the International Boat Show on the Sunshine Coast for the whole weekend selling raffle tickets for our group, I ran into Scott a good mate of mine, who I recently introduced to freshwater fishing and has been hooked ever since. I told him yesterday to head down to the dam just on dusk to see if he could catch a Toga. Well it wasn't a big one that he caught, very far from it and I wish I had a photo to show you. The Toga he managed to lure was only 75mm long caught on a 50mm Rapala sub-surface lure.

I was pretty damb elated about the news when he rang me about what he caught, he thought I was crazy getting so excited over a fish that was that small. It was just the assurance I needed knowing that the Toga are doing well in Ewen Maddock thanks to the prior stocking group for having the forsight to introduce Saratoga many years ago.

Cheers Dave

Good news Dave, with the time frame from the original stocking you would have to bet anything under about 80cm would have to have been bred in the dam, but a little tacker like that means they are still going!.

I'm heading up there for a quick session today, young bloke has laser skirmish on at 9am at Landsborough, so I have to force myself to toss the yak on the trailer and go wet a line until he is finished at 11am  ;D

Good luck,

Is the laser skirmish at Landsborough or at zone 3 at Kawana.

Good to hear there has been some recruitment of Toga this year Dave. The early spell of warm weather got them going early this year at my place as well, was a bit worried that the inflows may have disrupted things a bit in the impoundments.

Cheers
Steve.

It was at Landsborough, except when we got there, no sign of anyone at all. Called the people, nothing booked until 10:30, and that was under a different name. So my young bloke got it wrong somehow. Only had the one yak so couldn't hit the dam, so spent the morning cruising down through Donnybrook and Meldale looking at the high tides! Wouldn't want to be in there in the yak, Elimbah creek looked like it was 7 or 8 knots!

Dave

So electric motors aren't allowed on this dam because of the spread of weed, how does an electric motor aid in spreading weed?

Do you know if this ban is ever likely to be lifted?

There is not too many dams in South East Qld that you can't use an electric.

Cheers

Yeah Sel,

It's to do with the weed problem chopping it up and more easily spead, plus the fact if any got caught around the prop and the prop shaft accidently it may cause cross contamination to other lakes.

I can't see the ban being lifted, not in the near future anyhow.

Cheers Dave

Lake Kurwongbah will show their current thinking in this regard. (to weed spread) With the recent discovery of cabomba weed in there, and the heavy use it gets from ski boats, they will have to decide on whether to allow the ski boats to continue or not.

Politics will have a big influence on the decision no doubt.

Biggest problem spot I have found with making sure I carry no weed from dam to dam is the top of the bowmount mounting, with small bits of weed often caught in there and very hard to see.

The response in regard to Cabomba weed is understandable as fragments of week broken off can & do take root, thus spreading the weed. There's been alot of money spent in control & trying to eradicate this noxious weed. However, there should be consistency, as Lake Macdonald has a big problem with Cabomba weed, but electric motors are still permitted. It does make things confusing for some members of the public.

If Ewen Maddock Dam stays a paddle only lake as a result, then so be it. Not every lake needs to have fizz boats ripping around it. Lake Kurwongbah would be a perfect example of managing propellors chopping the weed up by making it a paddle only lake. Knowing there is Camomba & continuing to permit the fizz boats kind of blows out any excuse that propellors can/will make an impact at other places eg Ewen Maddock Dam. Again consistency on policy is required, if only to save credability.  I hope SEQWater read this & address it under their recreation review. Long term, I think this is what we will see.

Cheers,

fitzy..

Re the spread of Cabomba one thing which IMHO has been overlooked is the the growing popularity of Wake boats (hate these things with a passion far worse than ski lice) which now outnumber ski boats on Kurwongbah.  The ballast tanks that these things are fitted with hold large amounts of water which is pumped in and out, probably more potential to translocate pest weeds than any remnants on a prop.

Cheers

Dave

Sorry to take your thread off topic.. What is in place at the dam to try and eradicate this weed? I see a lot of the time I am fishing Wivenhoe dam there is contractors in boats on the water poisoning the weed around the edges..

Can this be done with this weed...Is the dam where they have a water plow to help get rid of it?

Cheers

Sel,

They have also tried roping off sections of the dam which are out of bounds. SEQ Water do clean ups from time to time.
