Police say they have recovered the body of a canoeist reported missing in the New South Wales Southern Tablelands last night.

The 21-year-old Goulburn man was with two friends when their canoe capsized in strong winds about 7pm (AEDT) on Pejar Dam, about 25 km north of Goulburn.

The trio had been on a fishing trip, but despite having life jackets in their canoe no-one was wearing one.

The two other men, aged in their late teens, managed to swim around 100m to shore and raise the alarm.

The search was suspended in deteriorating conditions at about 9:30pm (AEDT) before resuming early this morning.

A police helicopter spotted the body mid-morning about 10 metres from the shore.

It then took search and rescue boats another hour to pinpoint the location and pull the body from the water.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
