Title: Brissy River Bi Catch
Post by: justcasting on September 10, 2013, 09:30:13 PM
So I had my first fish on the river today & had a beautiful day. We managed 4 bass from 32-38 but I was surprised by the bi catch on lures. We had one lure taken by a 1m+ lungfish & then later the same lure was swallowed by a 1m+ eel. I managed to dislodge it from the lungfish with the side of the net so he could swim off happily but not so lucky with the eel as he took off with it. I see someone else managed a Saratoga the other day & I am wondering what other species in the river have been known to take a lure.

G'day mate,

Where abouts did you catch that lungfish in the Brisbane River?

Colleages Crossing, Twin Bridges, Fernvale or up near Wivenhoe Dam?

Cheers, Bondy

It was a few K's upstream from twin bridges. I saw about 5 of them throughout the day.

@ Justcasting,

Thanks for that, I only asked about the lungfish as I'm aware there is a researcher from UQ that does surveys at different areas to see if any are still around since the large flood.

How many Klms would you reckon upstream from the Twin Bridges?

Nice effort on the Bass, good to know freshwater eels are around. I've never had an eel caught on a lure before.

Cheers, Bondy

There's also a 1m+ lungy around the Harpeng to Shines stretch too

I'll bet there'd be nearly 100 of them.

Good chance if it! Also have seen a couple in the Bremer not far from Shapcott park.

There's thousands of them in the river down from Wivenhoe, possibly 10s of thousands.

Not according to ex-MP Peter Garrett.  If he'd known they were there he would never have allowed the recycled water pipeline to go through. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I was aware that they were in there but I did not expect to have one take a lure. Is it usual to have that happen.

Not commonly caught on a lure.

Not unknown though, Pam got a big one at Harpeng Road on a lure, I saw Fitz land a monster at Wivenhoe a long time ago, I got one near Savages on a Spinnerbait.  Have dropped fish and wound in to find a scale the size of a dinner plate on a hook point a few times.

I see lungies almost every time I'm on the river anywhere in the fresh. Scare the bejesus out of you when they surface and roll around right near the yak! Never caught one on lure though. Species I have caught on lure in the Harpeng to Wivenhoe stretch are bass, yellowbelly, fork-tail catfish, eels, tilapia and my prized saratoga. I have been busted off by an unstoppable something a couple of times. Possibly a Mary River Cod. Got my lure back once after a massive run and found a small greenish scale pinned on a treble. This is what makes me think cod.

Thanks for your input guys,

i did not realise I opened up a pandoras box on this.

Have any of you used a GPS fix on those locations or just paddled downstream from below the spillway or pulled in at Twin Bridges and paddled upstream against the flow?

Cheers, Bondy

Yep there's plenty of lungie's around here, it's unfortunate but I think our little bait users at Shines have been knocking a few on the head again, as I see the odd ones dead up and down the river.
Good to see you got a few Bass as it's unusually quiet still, with absolutely no surface action again this morning at all not even from bait fish feeding.
Reports from 5 kayaker's down there was only two rat bass in a couple of hours.
After we get some rain to bring the bugs out again (on or about Tuesday) things will hopefully improve up here, but the water is still to cold and lower than normal which is not helping.
Did you get the bass on natural and/or darker colour lures in the Harpeng to Shines stretch, as the water is fairly clear at the moment and that's normally their preference when it's like that.
Also, roughly what time of the day did you mainly catch them, or when did they first start to hit your lures.
Anyway going to go put the yak in myself and give them a tickle up, as they should be awake and getting hungry by about now (maybe).

Cheers
Russell.

Sorry time to go

Fudgit,

I've only caught bass using live shrimp (freshwater prawn). I've tried to use lures in the past with no success.

Next time bring 1/8 - 1/4 oz Spinner Baits (White / Light Purple or Olive Green) or (Red / Black) no stinger hooks as you will snag to easily, slow roll them past the snags and bottom bounce them occasionally on the retrieve.

Cheers.

They are still schooling in the middle a bit too,  so bottom bouncing is a good fail safe ;)

Mainly schooling where it's around the 16' mark and even hitting them on the head with a Jackall or Plastic isn't waking them up at the moment.

Gotta go the Yak's beckoning.

Cheers.

I put the tinny in mid morning at twin bridges and worked my way up with the breeze helping us along. Working hard body's and plastics into the snags and didn't get anything till about 1pm when I pulled 2 bass in 2 casts off a protruding snag. The next 2 were taken in the next 2 hrs and then nothing late into the arvo. I did not see any schooling on the sounder but did get one dragging a lipless crank through the middle of a deeper hole.

@ justcasting

What size tinnie and was you using an outboard?

If so, what hp?

I might look into buying one (again) one day

bondy99 any small tinny would be fine in there. I used mainly the electric motor to get about keeping it as stealth as possible & I couldn't imagine trying to fish in there without the electric as you are always using it to maintain position around the snags or distance from the bank against wind & current etc. As far as outboard size again that won't matter much as you need to take it very steady in there as there is submerged timber everywhere. My boat is bigger than needed in there as I use it everywhere from the dams to the seaway but it is still small enough to get around in there. It is a 395 Explorer Hull with a 25Hp on it. I don't think you would want to be launching it without a 4WD as there is no ramp as such and there is sand under that pebble.
That spot really is best suited to canoe & kayaks but as I have kids to take fishing that is not a real option for me & it is nice to be able to stand up & cast etc.

I've launched a 4 metre tinnie there for years with an SS ute.

I've launched my 4.1 Aquamaster with 25 mercury there plenty of times, but that was when I has a 4x4. Now only have a Bitsamissin Triton 2x4 that gets bogged on wet bitumen and don't really want to get stuck & have to ask someone for help.

Pre floods I wouldn't have worried as it was very firm right to the edge. The only problem then was people parking their car right on the only launching spot.

It is embarrassing! I tried to launch just before winter with my 4x2 triton & got it sunk to the diff well back from the waterline. Had to wait hours for someone to show up & help as it was a weekday. That is the reason I suggested a 4WD in my earlier post

Thanks very much for your input guys, something to think about no doubt, food for thought as they say.

Yes, that is true an electric motor does have its advantages. I too would prefer tinnie over kayak / canoe as I sometimes tend to stand up on boats.

Kayaks and Canoes are good option, unfortunately not for me.

Might have to look into an old 4WD down the track. Nissan Patrol MQ, they any good?

Sounds like I need to go out with someone that has local knowledge of the area so I can get a grasp of the area in general.

I understand there would be a lot of snags and submerged logs moreso from the floods of late

If anyone has a tinnie that can offer an invite with the chance of catching a bass or two, feel free to get in contact.

Cheers, Bondy

Fair dinkum, this Bitsamissin is the worst car I've ever had. My first car, a beat up old HQ was better on dirt.....
