Lake Boga pumping starts next week

Pumping of water stored in Lake Boga to meet Murray River customer demand is due to start mid-January.
Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) Manager River Operations Andrew Shields said Lake Boga was one of the Victorian Mid-Murray Storages.
“Lake Boga’s operational purpose is to harvest and release water for distribution to Murray River customers,” Mr Shields said. “As a result of the recent long spell of hot dry weather demand is high and this water is now required by irrigators and communities downstream of the Little Murray Weir.”
Once pumping is under way, recreational users will need to be cautious of hazards in the lake as the water level falls. Diverters may need to extend suction lines.
“Depending on conditions and needs, by the end of February the lake could potentially fall by up to a metre from the current level at an estimated rate of up to 2cm per day. About 0.5m of this reduction is due to evaporation losses,” he said.
During pumping the water level will not fall below 67m AHD - about 15,000ML – and salinity levels will be closely managed.
GMW plans to refill the lake from excess River Murray flows later in the year depending on conditions during winter and spring. Water from the Torrumbarry Irrigation Area may also be transferred into Lake Boga at the end of the irrigation season.
