Title: Help sweetwater users....Please!
Post by: poddy mullet on May 01, 2011, 05:18:06 PM
Hey Guy's,
There are some comments giving me a pretty hard time for throwing illegal fishing into the spotlight on www.dailyliberal.com.au

You guys have seen the effort I put in to try and do somthing good for our waterways......

If you think what I have done is right, in regards to highlighting this issue, can you please post a comment of support in the comments section on this page??

I would really appreciate it as the comments are quite hurt full, un informed, and are probably made by those people who think it's their right to break the fishing laws!
Cheers All, Matt

I am all for fishermen sticking by the rules, and these rules must be inforced.  If not there will be no sport fishing for our Grandchildren, its as simple as that.

I believe that the grubs take advantage of the fact that there are no inspectors in site.  Probably due to a lack of funding that we do not see them on the water.

The same goes for the tightening up of the regs in the Territory on Barramundi.  The crabbing industry is another one where it is lightly policed.   (I wont go there. )

Imagine if the word got about that the stock squad was being reduced.  Cattle duffers would have a field day.

Have you noticed that when the Governments, state or federal, cut funding it is always our environment that suffers so Matt more power to your pen mate.

Regards Gordon

Matt, I have read the article and believe that you have said is fair.  As the old saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the most attention, it's interesting your feelings are hurt but do what you believe to be correct, I have spent some time in NSW working and fishing in my spare time and can say I never seen an inspector or officer check me or my QLD registered boat, but can tell you 1 out of every 3 visits to QLD dam I get checked.  So what I am saying is until you get the support of the fisheries you can only try to educate the public as to what is a good fishing practise for "future fish", good luck.

My Reply

Illegal is illegal. There is a reason for native fish to be regulated by size & season & the restriction in "catching fish for commercial gain" which, if fish are being caught for someone to make a buck is just wrong as well as being illegal.
What about the other restaurants in town who do the right thing but are not getting their fish "cheeply" or under the table. There's also a safety element involved. Who says a fish caught by Joe Blow in the river has been treated correctly, I for one don't want a case of food poisoning eating at the renegade restaurant.
The pratice is un-Australian, unfair & un-necessary, there's plenty of approved aquaculture fish farmers that breed yellowbelly, perch & cod. These guys are getting ripped off as well..... Good on you Matt for highlighting a potential problem & the lack of enforcement.

Matt,

You need a big set of gonads to stand up in public and fight for what’s right. “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing”, keep up the good fight

We had a similar problem up this way about 10 years ago.  I was a bit slow on the uptake until I found out the grub involved was related to someone at the enforcement agency. That’s when you call the minster and local MP.

Matt, one bit of advice.... make sure of your facts. If you believe someone is illegally selling recreataionally caught fish but can't prove it,  sure go for it & call in the media or authorities, but choose your words carefully if putting them in print.  If you state it as fact, you need to be able to back it up.

"Johno heard it from some bloke at the pub who lives next door to the cousin of the guy who fixed his car" isn't fact, but you're a smart fella & would aldready know all that so I'll shut up now.

Follow what your heart tells you to do mate......

Just took the time to read this story, great work Matt. Don't let the wrong doers bring you down, it just means your getting them scared that they can't continue their illegal cr@p.
Top work there and wish you all the best with shutting them down! :youbeauty

Matt,
you must be a nice bloke to allow negative comments on your expose of illegal fishing to affect you like that. The fact is that you had the principles to stand up for what you believe to be right and if more people did that we'd all be better off. It's all very easy to complain amongst ourselves about what is wrong, but it means a lot more when you stick your neck out and go public. The local paper should be well and truly in your corner and if not they should be taken to task for it. I like stirring things a bit and bombaard pollies and govt agencies with emails whenever the need arises. We should all do it because it's our democratic right. The fact that some drones are calling you names means you've struck a nerve. Keep up the good work and don't allow the wankers get to you. Remember this bit of advice my old Dad told me. "Only worry about the opinion of those whose opinion matters to you."
Cheers mate,
JD

Over the years I have seen a lot of worrying things happen, all the way from the use of square hooks to purposeful contamination of fresh waters.
Any attempt to place these abuses in front of the public so that they may be made aware of the problems so caused can only be highly praised and all or any support given to the person/s doing the revealing.
It is sad to see someone being personally abused for being interested enough in the welfare of our rivers and creeks and the wildlife that they contain so that our children and grand-children might be able to feel the thrill that catching a fish, and releasing it after a short tussle can give. I can still remember the first stickleback when i was six or seven. There has been a lot of water wet my lines since then, and for people to destroy this dream because of their greed is something that I cannot fathom.
More power to you Matt, and remember, sticks and stones may break your bones but names cannot hurt you
