The latest annual golden galaxias survey

The 2014 survey of the endemic golden galaxiid, Galaxias auratus was recently undertaken in Lakes Sorell and Crescent.  This survey is undertaken annually as part of environmental monitoring requirements associated with the Lakes Sorell and Crescent Water Management Plan.

Twelve small fine mesh fyke nets were set in each lake for one night with a sample of 100 fish measured and the total catch recorded for each lake . Total numbers recorded were Lake Sorell 2,357 and Lake Crescent 5,787.  This result reflects the long term balance of the populations whereby the highest density of golden galaxias is in Lake Crescent.  Overall, a robust and healthy population was observed in each lake with a good spread of age classes indicating regular annual recruitment over the past five years or so.
