Title: If Lake Wivenhoe was open to outboards?
Post by: Editor on July 31, 2013, 02:31:51 PM
What would you do if Lake Wivenhoe was opened to 4 stroke only outboard motors?

I would happy if outboards were allowed only if they were allowed on the same conditions as those allowed at Lenthalls.
 Speed limit 6knots.
Max of 60hp 4 stroke only or compliant di 2 strokes.

Cheers
Ray

G'day Ray

What about no maximum motor size, 4 stroke (no DI), and 8 knots?

Most boats at 8 knots creates wash even at 6 knots my tinney is borderline.
Most speed restriction areas have signs 6 knots no wash.
I have no problems with di 2 strokes similar to etech.
I am fortunate as I already have a tinney with a 30hp 4 stroke as well as a 4 hp four stroke.
I do not for see seq water allowing old technology 2 strokes even with the vastly improved 2 stroke oils available so anyone with this type of motor is going to miss out.
 Cheers
Ray

What's the point of letting in outboards then restricting speed? Is it to keep out skiers and hooning? And let it be fishers only?

FYI: I have 60 yam 4st and love bass fishing, my main haunt is hinze with electric. But want to get around more.

Main reason for allowing outboards is a safety issue.
A low speed limit will  help preserve the peace and solitude of the dam and also pacify the leaseholders about possible erosion problems.
I dare say that there will be a lot of different perspectives on this issue.
My main fishing is also leccy at NPD and Hinze and I doubt that that will change no matter what will happen at Wivenhoe but things possibly may change at the dams I fish so I am having 2 bob both ways.

Technically I don't see the need to limit the outboards at all.  The pollution issue is a furphy as there are no restrictions in Somerset and all that water ends up in Wivenhoe.  There are also no restrictions in the river below Wivenhoe so anything goes from Atkinsons Crossing to Kholo.  The water outlet for Brisbane is below Kholo.  The horsepower limit is not necessary.  A 10 footer with a 30 is quicker than a 20 footer with a 90.  You don't see roads with a 60 kph limit that is also restricted to 4 cylinder cars.  The erosion issue also doesn't stack up.  There is a lot of erosion damage around Wivenhoe now, comparable with Somerset, so I would suggest windborn waves are the culprit there.  My suggestion is, and was at the meeting, to mirror Lake Cressbrook, not Lenthalls.  Cressbrook works.

Well I guess I would be still on the electric and unable to start the e tec while someone with an old carburated 4 stroke( and some new ones) that meets no emission standard whatsoever is ok.
Seems sensible to me.

Yes I would have my doubts about some of the el cheepo chinese 4 stroke imports. Do not know if they have to meet any standards?
The honda and merc carby 4 strokers met the standards on the day .
Re speed limit as long as it is realistically low and strictly enforced ( Especially near any public areas)
Remember there are a lot of people in small tinneys, canoes and yaks on the water there and whilst the more experienced can cope the newbies could get into trouble.
Anyone got a definition of measuring wash?
At what point is it measured?
Who will be responsible for enforcing any restrictions on the water.?
SEQ rangers?( Do they have any powers as all I have seen is that they ask people to leave)
Fisheries or water police or all ?
Cheers

You'll have to wait until November when the decision is made Ray.  This is just a Poll to ask people what they would do.

SEQWater were talking about 4 Stroke and Hi Tech 2 Stroke Steve so your Etech should be OK.  That is only if the Leaseholders campaign in not successful.

Bump. And there we have it. Wivenhoe is now open with restrictions.

How does this effect you?

Made new areas more accessible.
 I am all for it.
Made the dam a much safer place.Good to know forkies are everywhere :-[
Now all they have to do is get rid of the access fees.

I think you'll find the access fees are going to be expanded to cover all of SEQWater lakes.  That will be a bit of a death knell for the lakes that have been double dipping with both SIP funds and boating permit funds, unless there will be a third fee to use a couple of lakes.

As for Wivenhoe, it has brought a lot more people to the area and has seen a bit of a boost in sales of small four strokes at local dealers.  Met a guy out there last week who had just bought a 4 stroke so he could use the dam.  I'm sure we'll see a big increase in numbers when Wivenhoe comes into it's own during the colder months, it's never really been a summer fishery for Bass.

I've spoken to a guy who has been at the dam almost every Friday since it opened and he has not seen any of the behaviour that has been spoken about on other sites such as water skiing, tubing and speeding.

Well I took my kayak for a sail at Hamon. You know nice and quite, enjoy the day

till

bbbbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrppppppppppp....some w@nker with a two stroke on the back (small tinny that should have sunk) came past. Not close enough to get a rego number but that thing was so noisy. You heard him from the boat ramp to the other side

So not all playing by the rules.

I wonder if it will see more kids getting out there, in the form of being in tinnies that can now access the lake where you may not have taken a kid in a kayak/canoe before.

At the same time I wonder if there number of kayakers fishing Wivenhoe has or will decrease?

From me as a Kayaker, I"m waiting for the cooler months before getting out there again. I'm actually looking forward to accessing toward the top of the dam (dunno when that will happen yet..) to explore new grounds. Will probably be out there this season more than the last.

Ok I'll admit I was very skeptical about boats being on the dam in the first place, But the two occasions I have been there now and I am talking Hamons Cove. I have seen 5 trailers in the car park and out on the water only saw one boat. So the boats will have little effect on the top of the dam in relation to kayakers or sail boats. So there will be plenty of water for all craft.

I have since bought a second hand boat and I am looking at upgrading as its not good enough for the princess. I would like to buy a Clitrex but sh!t they're dear, now looking at a Stessco..
