SEQWater Recreation Access Update
« on: September 11, 2014, 08:37:42 AM »
Lake Somerset

Westvale Road access point at Somerset opens 20th September!
As a result of the Recreation Review, a new access point has been established in the northern end of Lake Somerset. Located off Westvale Road, the new access point is suitable for boats and paddle craft, providing users with an additional launch point to access the lake. This will assist in easing congestion at the boat ramps at Kirkleagh Road and The Spit. The new facility includes a boat ramp, car and trailer parking and a toilet, and is located in the 6 knot speed limit zone, so will be an ideal launch point for those keen for a fish or a paddle. Access will be available from the 20th of September! Established with the support of the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing.

Change to recreation on Lake Kurwongbah

Paddlers are now able to enjoy the waters of Lake Kurwongbah for the first time since the Sideling Creek Dam was built in 1969. This is a major change and a great opportunity for families to enjoy one of the region’s most picturesque lakes.
With the support of the Department of National Parks Recreation Sport and Racing, a new launch point and washdown facility has been established at Mick Hanfling Park for paddlers to use. Paddlers are asked to launch from this location and always use the washdown facility to help prevent the spread of aquatic weeds.
Seqwater has been working closely with the existing users of Lake Kurwongbah to enable both club skiers and paddle craft to share the lake while ensuring public safety, water quality and the environment. To facilitate this the following will apply:
• Lake Kurwongbah will be open to the general public for paddle craft each week from
Friday to Monday inclusive,
• Waterski Queensland and the Lake Kurwongbah Water Ski Zone club will have use
of the lake from Tuesday to Thursday inclusive,
• The Lake Kurwongbah Water Ski Zone club will continue to have access to the lake
for its annual charity events, and
• The current arrangement for the existing rowing club will not be impacted.
This interim arrangement will be in place until a detailed water quality assessment of neighbouring Lake Samsonvale is completed in 12-18 months time. Importantly, the change will still result in the general community having majority access to Lake Kurwongbah using paddle craft for the first time since the dam was built.
Fishing is permitted from the shoreline of designated recreation areas 7 days a week, and from paddle craft each week from Friday to Monday inclusive.

Time to explore Wivenhoe Hill

The Wivenhoe Hill trails are now open! As a result of feedback received during the review, a new 16 kilometre multi-use trail network is now open at Wivenhoe Hill offering spectacular views of Lake Wivenhoe to mountain bike riders, horse riders, walkers and trail runners. Click here for details.
Entry to Ewen Maddock trail network
The entry point to the Ewen Maddock trail network at Gympie Street North has received some minor improvements. Located near Landsborough, the entry point provides additional access to the trail network from the south. The area has seen a clean up on both Seqwater and Council land, which will hopefully assist visitors in accessing the trails. We are currently undertaking a review of our trail mapping at Ewen Maddock and will soon be updating our signage.
Fancy a dip?
Seqwater is currently investigating locations for the establishment of designated swimming areas at Lake Dyer and Lake Moogerah, following feedback received during the review. With the weather starting to heat up, the designated swimming areas will no doubt be a welcome addition to recreation at the lakes! Stay tuned for further updates.
Trail improvements welcomed at Lake Manchester
As a result of the recreation review, trail users at Lake Manchester are benefiting from improved recreational facilities. A trail linkage has been created, allowing visitors to travel around the lake via the trail network without using Lake Manchester Road. We have received fantastic feedback regarding this improvement so far and are excited to see people enjoying the beautiful surrounds of Lake Manchester. Don't forget to check the Recreation and Safety Notices page before visiting any Seqwater lake.
Somerset speed gazettal
A reminder for those visiting Lake Somerset that a 6 knot speed limit has been implemented in the northern section of the lake due to the safety risks posed by submerged hazards. Signage has been erected at all launch points advising of the 6 knot speed limit area. Seqwater staff will continue to actively patrol the lake, and will monitor speeding in this northern area. Details of the boundaries of the 6 knot zone can be found on the Seqwater website. There is ample room in the remainder of the lake for water skiing and jet skiing enthusiasts!
Borumba, Macdonald and Hinze reports due for release soon
The Recreation Management Plans and Recreation Guides have been released for all lakes except Cluster 9 (Lakes Borumba and Macdonald) and Cluster 10 (Hinze Dam). These will be released in September and October respectively. Make sure you download your copy - the documents will be available on the Seqwater website once released.

Hi Basser, any idea if there are plans to open additional boat access points on Wivenhoe in the future  :?)

Happy with the 6 knots, but could shorten the distances if alternate launch facilities were available on such a big body of water  :))

Cheers

Billies bay will open, eventually.  That's the only one.  The Council doesn't have the money to fix the bridges and Seqwater can't repair the roads until the bridges are done.
