Thanks for the advice folks. Thats an interesting site on rigs Callop.
I have been done some testing and the double overhand is definately the weak point.
This is to make leaders for the fly line. Saves buying the tapered leaders.
What I am doing is twisting up 3.5 metres of line with the bat drill, doubling back about a metre of this and letting it twist up.
At the point where the leader goes from double to single strand I tie off with a double overhand then letting the single line unwind.
When I test this out, it breaks a lot earlier at the point of the knot than when I stretch a single strand of the same line.
Anybody have any ideas on what knot I should be using there

I personally just save time by keeping a few knotless tapperd leaders in my kit. At least you shouldnt be worrying about knots with them. Each to their own i suppose.

Best system for single strand twisted fly leaders is to start with a bimini and a long loop about 2 meters. Cut the loop open at the end and then twist the 2 legs together, tie this off with a quick granny knot so it doesn't come undone. So far we have a single strand of 1-2m then bimini then double twisty of 2m. Next double back the twisted section on itself and twist it together to create 4 strand butt leader, finish with double overhand. finished leader should be 1-2m single, 1/2 m double, 1m 4 strand, and you have a loop on the end to connect to the fly line.
I did it like this a long time ago, then went to just a double strand with 4 strand butt, loop on both ends. This saves time and line as you can use the but section for a long time by just replacing your single leader with loops.

Just need to make it as transparent and as far away as possible from the big braided loop.

Pretty sure knotted dogs had 2 nail knots Dale but they were only made in 2 strand to 4 strand with loops on both ends, great leaders in the sticks at Faust :thumbsup
Gordon, the best approach for fly leaders is to keep it simple mate, like I said, I "used to" do these things (outa luck Paul :P). Basic leader for 6-8 wt rods would be a 60lb butt section 1 1/2 m long with 1-1 1/2 m of tippet, connect them with loops or 3 turn surgeon's

I use a nail knot for all my leader construction. Never had one fail at the knot.
