Murray Cod in Winter

Hey guys,

Planning a trip down Texas. Apparently they shut down during winter according to specific resources but will it be worth it making a trip down. Just curious as to people experiences with this

They don't shutdown.

They will bite as usual all the way through to the closed season in the spring.

Just like you they are a liitle slow and quite early up, so have a sleep in.

Arvo sessions are usually better.

Just returned from a trip out there over the weekend, we got quite a few cod and a couple of yella's. No real size to the Cod but the evidence of big ones are there after capturing a GP of 45cm in length which had a lucky escape from being engulfed by a big cod. Yes we had to work for them, however best fishing was at night, 9 from 10 fish came from water less than 30cm with one hitting my lure literally at my feet.

Good job mate! Glad to see there's a few around cause me and a few mates are heading out there soon as well.
Just wondering did you get any on surface lures?

Hello Tom,

At night we predominantly fished with surface lures for sure, especially being land based. When we were fishing during dark hours in our kayaks we mixed it up a bit with TT Lures spinnerbaits which were very effective. I used Rapala's  X-Rap Walk 13's for surface action that didn't disappoint.

As the water level is extremely low at the moment, fish held within pools guarded by skinny water rapids are very opportunistic, hence the reason at night we were targeting them in shallow water on surface as they hunted a field from their lairs. Something I was taught by indigenous mates many moons ago whilst living in that region. They are shy of lights, so keep headlamps low and fishing on a new moon would be preferable, rather than a full moon.

Some sections of the river which were 500m to 800m long and 30m wide were only 90cm deep in the middle, however it was the skinny country where we had most of our success, some of which was only 5m wide and as mentioned very shallow.

Just our luck as the cold temps and wind come arrive this weekend. Ooh well, I'll just wear fur underpants I guess.

What flies would be good on the carps below Glenlyon?  Cod flies are sorted
