FISHING REPORT   –   17-11-2011

Past week

BASS

Very similar to last week, Boondooma is still fishing well, with good numbers of Bass, up to 50cm landed, throughout the dam. Best methods are casting Spinnerbaits and Jackalls, in dark colours, to the edges, hopping Mask Vibes and Blades around Pelican Point as well as trolling hard body lures. Bait fishing has quietened down a bit, but there are still a few Bass taking live shrimps and worms.
Bjelke Peterson has produced a few just legal Bass on bait around Pelican Point and Baramba Creek above and below the dam is still producing quality fish in good numbers.
Somerset is still fishing quite well, with some quality Bass taken around the Pelican Point area, slow rolling Soft Plastics and Spinnerbaits along the bottom, there has also been some smaller fish taken on Ice Jigs in the same area of the dam.
Maroon Dam has again produced good catches of Bass on surface lures, fishing the edges, early morning and late afternoon.

Yellowbelly and Cod

Still big numbers of Yellowbelly in Boondooma, basically in the same areas that the Bass are, again, the best methods are casting Jackalls and Spinnerbaits to the edges, hopping Mask Vibes and Blades around Pelican Point, trolling hard body lures and using live Worms and Shrimp at the start of the timber in the Stuart and Boyne arms of the dam.
The Macintyre at Goondiwindi is still producing reasonable catches of Yellowbelly in the town reaches, for the best results, use frozen saltwater yabbies, live Shrimp and Crays.
Coolmunda has again produced plenty of Yellowbelly and a few Cod this week,  the majority of the fish have been caught, trolling hard body lures.
Leslie Dam has fired up over the past week with good numbers of quality Yellowbelly, Silver Perch and a few Cod taken on bait and trolled hard body lures. There was a 30lb Cod caught here this week.
Glenlyon has again fished well over the past week, with good numbers of Yellowbelly and Cod, caught mainly on Spinnerbaits and hard body lures. Pittsworth angler Errol Pearce caught a nice 98cm Cod here last week, the fish was taken on a Spinnerbait.

Redclaw continue to become a more active in Cressbrook, Boondooma, Bjelke Peterson and Somerset, as the water temperature increases.


 

GOLD COAST AND THE TWEED

Good numbers of Yellowtail Kingfish and GT’s, taken around 9 Mile Reef, Squire around Cook Island, plenty of Snapper and Cobia on the 24’s, some nice Dolphin Fish and Wahoo on the 50’s and on the closer reefs at night, there has been a few Tailor and Trag Jew taken. Inshore has seen plenty of Whiting throughout the Tweed River, Coombabah Creek and Pimpama River and also near the Council Chambers in the Nerang River. Flathead throughout the Tweed River, also around Crab Island and the Aldershots at the Gold Coast, Mangrove Jack around the rock walls and bridges in the Tweed, the Gold Coast Seaway is producing good numbers of Jewies, Tarpon and Trevelly on the run in tide, a few Whiting and Dart off most of the beaches and there has been a few Sandcrabs caught in the Northern parts of the Broadwater, as well as a few Muddies in the upper reaches of the Tweed.
 
SUNSHINE COAST

Good catches of Snapper at 5 Mile Reef, a few Cobia around 12 Mile and North Reef, quality Trout, Sweetlip and Snapper on Sunshine Reef, and there has been some big Kingies and Amberjacks caught around “The Hards”. Inshore has seen good numbers of big Flathead and Jack’s around the Boardwalk and Bar entrance at Caloundra, Flathead also throughout the Noosa River, Mangrove Jacks to 60cm and smaller Trevelly on surface poppers in most of the canals, between the lakes in the upper reaches of the Noosa River, is still producing good catches of Mangrove Jack and Barramundi up to 1m plus, mainly on lures and soft plastics, and plenty of Whiting of the beaches and throughout the creeks and rivers.

I am sorry, but why would a report promote the catching of a species in their close season?  Just wrong in my opinion.

I recently heard the same regarding meter + barra being caught in the Noosa River. I was told that locals have been getting them on livies upstream of the Sheraton. (wherever that is).

Must be something to the report......

Good to hear there's barra numbers in the Noosa River, concerning they're being targetting in the breeding season. But if you believe what DEEDI tell us, they're vagrant fish south of Fraser Island and probably can't /wont breed..... If that's correct, then a closed season south of Fraser Is is redundant.

Hmmm that part about the barra is a bit on the nose... Must be a few banjos kicking around up there that don't realise it is closed season.. Or even if it is just a bycatch why advertise it? Will just encourage those who have no regard for the laws to get amongst it..
