2016 annual monitoring program of Galaxias auratus completed

The annual survey of the golden galaxia, (Galaxias auratus) in lakes Crescent and Sorell has been completed and healthy, robust populations were confirmed.

Galaxias auratus is a listed threatened species and this small fish species is endemic to these lakes.

The annual monitoring program involves the setting of a number of fine mesh fyke nets at designated locations in each lake over 24 hours.  These nets are very passive ensuring that all fish captured are released unharmed after our required data has been recorded.

The life span of the fish is approximately 3 - 4 years and the photo shows the spread of age classes from a first year fish (35 - 45 mm) through to a 3 year old fish (75 - 100mm).
