Title: Cod Opening; New England
Post by: MartainV on December 03, 2014, 12:16:49 PM
I've thrown a few posts up here about drifting out west from the Gold Coast probably 2-3 times a year. Well this opening proved to be my best session yet. The old man had to do some work out there, so after giving him a hand for a couple of days we managed to fish for another three, and managed around 8 cod and 5 yellowbelly between us. I also managed to jag a carp with my trebles on purpose in the shallows; was good for a laugh.
It's noticeably dry out there, and so there is plenty of walking/dragging canoes between the pools which made for hot work! Well worth it though. But this is the first time we didn't lose a lure because going for a swim when snagged was almost a relief.

One of the days a tiler dad was working with also came along. We had a spare little bass rig with 8-10lb gear. Sure enough he landed a fish that went just under 90cm... It was his first cod. Was a heck of a fight, and I really don't know how he managed to hold on to it.
Safe to say that Beginner's Luck is well and truly alive haha!

Very interesting too was that multiple cod had swallowed whole freshwater mussels. About 3 of them half regurgitated them when caught. Anyone else ever seen that? I'm guessing the shell must open up inside their gut.

All in all it was a great trip, and left me with more ideas for next time.
Spinnerbaits were the most effective lure for getting more fish. Endless casting at big structure near weedbeds proved time and again to be the winner. Often if there was good snags but minimal weed beds in the pool we wouldn't come up with a hit. This was just a trend we noticed anyway.

Tight lines to all  :youbeauty

2 1/2 days after the opening you've already spent 3 days fishing the New England.  Lucky bugger.

Came across a couple of cod full of mussels last year during a particularly dry stretch and the river was low. They were still in pretty good condition but it was obvious there wasn't much else they could eat at the time.
