Title: Australian Lure Expo 2012
Post by: Sweetwater on January 10, 2012, 09:07:33 PM
I'm in the planning stages of putting together the first ever Australian Lure Expo (ALE).

This event is designed to highlight & celebrate Australian made lures, (commercial, cottage & home made), both current and past and to have a place for all admirers of Australian lures, lure collectors, and interested anglers to get together.

It is also intended to be a place where those keen on getting into making their home made lures can come along to learn how to do it and pick up some hints & tips from some work shops.

Where
The planned venue is the new Somerset Regional Council's Community Hall at Fernvale, Qld. A brand new facility with secure large under cover floor space, large parking areas. There is also space for exibitors to be able to camp on site with toilet & shower facilities being available.
http://maps.google.com.au/?ll=-27.455379,152.65725&spn=0.004789,0.010525&t=h&z=17&vpsrc=6 (http://maps.google.com.au/?ll=-27.455379,152.65725&spn=0.004789,0.010525&t=h&z=17&vpsrc=6)

When
Speaking with some lure manufacturers, winter is probably the best time so the plan is to hold the ALE in July/August. Dates will be confirmed.

Initially it was thought that this event would be a one day afair, however the growing enthusiasm & excitement in lure collectors and industry has shown the need to make it a 2 day event.

If anyone would like some input or is intersted in attending, feel free to post a reply to this topic or drop me an email HERE>>> (info@sweetwaterfishing.com.au?subject=Australian Lure Expo enquiry)

This topic will be updated as information is confirmed or changed. I appreciate that there are numerous forums or groups who may be interested, however I simply don't have time to visit the many sites to replicate this info so feel free to add a link to this topic in other websites or email groups. Members of sweetwater fishing can set a notification so that you get a message of any new posts/replies to this topic.

In the mean time, feel free to post your ideas, thoughts or questions as a reply to this topic, also if you would like to attend either as an exibitor or visitor.

Kind Regards,

Garry Fitzgerald

Hi fitzy sounds awesome mate,.

Being an Australian Lure Expo, I personally would have no interest what so ever looking at plastic lures made in china.  does the name in itself explain what it should be about ?  You can see enough plastic lures in any shop or K-mart for that fact without bringing them to something like this. ( just my thoughts )

I would be keen to talk to and share info on Collectable Australian Lures
( what is classed as collectable I have my idea but would be different to others )

I would like to learn about Older Australian Lures and I reckon there is nothing better than seeing one in person and asking the story about it ......A picture on the internet just isn't the same sometimes.

We have some very talented cottage lure makers around at present and this would be a great chance to see some of the models up close.

I reckon the Valuation and confirmation of past lure makers art would be a great asset for the new up and keen collectors whom have trouble picking a real or no so real lure.

But as the time comes closer it would be good to know the finer details as it unfolds............ In saying that, Who is or who are the main organisers in this event ?

I hope it would be a two day event as I don't think one day would be enough to have a chat and oggle over peoples lures and catch up with a few new faces.

anyway that's just a couple of my thoughts but most of all keep it ...... AUSSIE  AUSSIE Aussie

G'Day Tony,

Thanks for the reply.
Basically I'm the organiser in that I've had the idea rattling around in my head for a few years & started kicking it around a bit more seriously over the past several months. In saying that, I've had some great input from some avid collectors I know & have taken their ideas on board so in essence this is as much their doing as anyone's. I would love to throw names out here but until I get their ok I wont (I'm sure you know who they are). So I guess all the official stuff is on my plate, the ideas and concept is from a few folks. Like alot of events I've run over the years, to pull off anything successful you need good people on the team and we will certainly need some volunteers to pull this off successfully. I'm shooting for this to work on a cost recovery basis & to make it work as cheeply as possible as I'm paying the bills. So if I can't get enough volunteers, I'll have to pay workers which will put the cost of the event up. At the end of the day, the success or failure depends on who comes.

I will be inviting some collectors with alot more knowlege & experience than myself to come along to do lure identification / confirmation / valuation etc and encourage everyone to bring their "old unknown" lures from from the box or shed along.

What is Collectable? How long is piece of string? Some people will collect anything, other only want specific things so what is collectable is a personal thing. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Yep, Aussie all the way. At this point I'm not interested in specifics or politics of who or who shouldn't be "allowed" to display. Heck if its an Aussie made lure, plastic, timber, foam, rubber, metal or spinnerbait it's fine by me. I've seen some Aeroplane spinners that have got to be 50 years old that are true works of art.

Cheers,

fitz..

G'Day Andrew.
Cheers mate, will be handy to have you on board.  :youbeauty

I recon there will be the odd lure for sale or trade  :P  Noting that commercial lure makers sell at a wholesale / bulk level, I've invited the local tackle store along (Charltons Fishing) to have a stand for any commercial guys to work through them to make their lures available to the public.

Cheers,

G'Day Fitz I imagine you have spoken to some of the guys involved with Lure Lovers as there is a huge depth of talent and variety coming out of that site. There appears to be a good number of QLD makers on there and judging by the last meet and greet/fish together up a Borumba last November plenty are prepared to travel to share their passion. A great idea mate all the best in you planning and preparation. Cheers Pat.

G'day Gary ,
l know you have 100 different things to organise with the ALE , but l was thinking maybe a stand could be set up to show/sell 'remote' luremakers from far and wide parts of Oz who cant attend the event?
lt could be run by a couple of volunteers?
Just a thought...

this will be a decent turn out mate, have had a lot of interest shown, and a few interstate makers have shown a definate interest, and are willing to travel....... will be good to see it get off the ground, if I can volunteer on the days in any way Id be happy to help.
A few of us are discussing setting up a stall together............A couple of quality makers, and then just my busted ass homemades thrown in amongst them... :thumbsup.
Hope all goes well, could be bigger than you think.

G'Day Barney,

Thanks for your input.  :thumb A great idea. For commercial makers/sellers (anyone with an ABN) can make their lures available through Charltons Fishing who will be there for the event. However from a hobbyist perspective, if there's enough call for it I'll call for local helpers, or possibly team the remote makers up a local surrogate/sponsor to fly their flag for them.

Cheers,

fitzy..

G'Day Pat.

Thanks for your input.  :thumbsup Once I've got some firm idea on how much many inside / outside stalls (for want of a better term) we can fit & the costs, I will be doing some advertising. There's enough people involved to be able to diseminate the info to clubs/groups etc once the info locked & loaded. From my position (part owner of this sweetwater) , its poor "netiquette" for me to post info on other non-affiliated sites without permission/blessing.

Cheers,

fitzy..

I don't know how the above can be taken to mean that if you have an ABN you wont be permitted to attend unless your contact Charltons Bait & Tackle store.  :o
This is only an OPTION for the commercial makers who:
A- don't sell direct to the public, and/or
B- cannot attend.
The mention of the ABN is that to sell any goods through Charltons (or any tackle store) you require an ABN to trade as many hobyists have found out when approaching tackle stores.

I trust that the above has clarified any misunderstanding or misinformation. BTW- if anyone wishes to contant ME regarding this event, my email is
info[at]sweetwaterfishing.com.au, feel free to drop me a line & I'll give you my phone number.

Kind Regards,

I don't know if its'a good idea or a bad idea, but I did think about the possibility of a swim tank for lure makers to demonstrate to others how there lure swim in water. Some makers might like the idea while others might not and then there might be a health and safety issue too..

Fully agree Sel, it would be fantastic option. I can't see it being workable however, considering I'm trying to keep this down to bare bones budget & those demo tanks cost thousands, could easily double the cost of the event & therefore site fees. Thomo's tank will be on the road to Sydney at the time being booked for the sydney boat show the weekend after.
Anyone got a spare Super Tank or swimming pool sitting in their backyard they're happy to bring along & set up?

Failing that, the river is about a km down the road & I can look at options for 2013.

I could be up there on Sunday where I could check it out if you are still interested.

It was just an idea, I'm not talking the ones with fish in them. Most lure makers will have a test tank or Bath tub, they use to swim their lures in before the sell them, like a tune up tank. I remember seeing some tanks like I mean at the Hatchery, from memory Kev(Horsey Lures) passed them on. No biggy though just an idea...

Test tanks are easy if you have the space--make a rectangular wooden frame to about 2.4 (L) X .900 (W) X .900 deep ---staple some clear / or black plastic sheet on the top rail and fill it with water ,, instant tank. It's the 'Cod Lure' makers that pose the problem-------------tanks 5 meters deep can be difficult. ;D

Have a couple of lure makers confirmed for doing demonstrations for the weekend. Won't let the cat out of the bag yet, need to talk to the trusty team of advisers / helpers Brolly & Brad.

Am pretty annoyed with Moreton Hire, they've had their crack at it & they can now officially shove it.  :thumbdown Can't say they (Moreton Hire) have offered more than just bullshit so far, promised quotes & when I've again phoned & again emailed they responded that their sales team will get back to me in the next day or two  :popcorn) ..... but still nothing.
I hope the manager (and other customers) read this!!!  >:(
Another hire company can have the opportunity & planning can get back on track.  :tick

:youbeauty Good isn't it, This is about Australian Lures after all. The Cottage industry in this country has provided fishermen with some great Lures through the years and many of the larger makers did the hard yards from their back shed or garage to where they are today.

From the interest shown over at LureLovers.com it's looking like this could end up being bigger than Ben Hur Fitzy.  :D

Awesome idea, and I look forward to the event. Give me a shout if I can be of any assistance.

There will be a webpage ready in the next week with details/info.  :tick

Mate the thing you saw was just my blog under my profile. We've all got them on our profile. I'd put something there asking not to send PM for general questions as I was getting scores of them every day wanting info like gps marks to a certain spot or the Omega 3 content of tilapia.

Happy to get PMs with genuinely personal type questions.

In regard to the Lure Expo, enquiries can be emailed to info@sweetwaterfishing.com.au or call me 0423 464 311

Fishing Monthly Group are moving outside & will be bringing their Marquee along. That frees up one of the internal sites... there's only a couple of these left so get in quick in you're interested.

Also, Fishing Monthly will be selling subscriptions at the Expo, the first 80 subscriptions get a limited edition Tom Barratt hand carved lure with their subs. I know of a couple of folks who reckon they're going to camp at the front door to get their limited edition lure.

er, better make that 79 cause I will be lining up as well.  :youbeauty

Still toying with the idea of making a day trip, or staying local on the Saturday night. Not sure if I own enough jumpers for Fernvale on a July night ;)
Apart from getting run over in the stamped for the freebie lure mentioned above on the saturday, will there be any variation between the two days? anything running late saturday arvo or in the evening? or different demo's on different days?

Or am I just adding to the headache ;)

Deep River Lures are on site #8. This is inside. The building is fully securable outside of hours, only one key & that will be in my pocket,  will be someone on site all night for security.  :thumb

Not disrespect to you Sel & I appreciate you forwarding on the message, however if any exhibitors wish to ask questions, my contact details on on the site www.lureshow.com.au (http://www.lureshow.com.au)

Questions / enquiries are best done directly (in person) to me. I noted that someone rang me after nobody replied to a message he posted on a website that is totally unrelated to planning or running of the Australian Lure Expo. A bit silly really..........

Fitzy, I went today and had a ball! Great to see many lures from yesteryear combined with the best from today. Picked myself up some nice little timber numbers to attack the Brizzy River bass with soon, as well as the parts for my first attempts at making my own jig spinners. Result - put a few together today, fished off the bank at Shines Rd to see how they swam, and nabbed a 26cm bass! Small, but absolutely rapt!

Top work Fitzy. Cant wait till next year (with a bit more cash!).  :thanks

Fitzy  :yourock

I was there to see Wood carving demo which was amazing and truly inspiring.  Maybe next year they can have blanks for people to buy and try at home???   It was very impressive to see such a huge turn out for the 2nd day.  There was an great variety of the new and old style of lures.  All the people where soo eager to answer my newb question and willing show/explain how it worked.  With  Some of the designs i would on never thought possible.  I'm sooo glad to see Australian brands where bought soo eagerly.  I didn't indeed to buy anything but walked away with a few lures ( whoopsee )

Rod Harrison demo gave me some excellant tips and advice on rigging.  Which will surely save me time and money and diffinetly reduce my chances of losing that trophy fish.

Amazing Expo, can't wait for next years which hopefully will be bigger and just as awesome

Cheers Brad.

Full credit to you Fitzy on pulling together the Expo, the numbers there attest to it being another long term winner, and next time will be needing some more floor space if possible going by reaction this year.

The demo by Tom of Gidgee Lures was my highlight at the show, and of course like others left some money at the expo for lure buys.

 :Clap) :thanks

Just want to clarify, before I'm howled down for bass fishing out of season - I wasn't actually looking to catch a bass, I was just swimming the lures about 3ft from the edge, about 20cm down, to see if they swam true, when the little blighter took an interest. Rest assured he was quickly released in good nick  :)

I very much appreciate the positive comments / feedback above.  :thumb

I have to say that there are alot of people that pulled that event together, people that worked very hard to showcase Aussie Lures.
First and foremost, Mike Brolly Gilbert who spend hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours to make displays for his and other peoples lures. He seriously busted his butt to get this done and to help pull the collectors together.
Secondly, Brad (Fishaholic) Holman who also worked very hard to put displays together, coordinate collectors and help organise the excellent team who did seminars/workshops.
These two fellas did as much as anyone else so my personal gratitude goes to them.

Avid collectors like Barry Cross, Rob D, Thomo (and many others) who brought their collections from all over the country to share with the world at their own expense. And Tony Payne who actually paid for a site so he could share his much loved collection. I'm just blown away fellas.  :Clap)

Also the small army of workers: Felicity, Andrew, Lyn, Julie, Sandy, Gordon, Jason, Alan, Dave, Paul, Pam, Dale, Jenine, Harro who did their fair share of long hours to make sure it happened as smoothly as possible.

I'm pretty happy how it all came together for a first time effort. A few things to improve it have been noted for action.

A big thanks to everyone who stayed back to help back up / clean up. Those mentioned above + Craig, Taryn & lads from Charltons Fishing as well as Duncan, Janelle and kids (from FishHead Tackle).

If I missed anyone my appologies, too much done by too many people to remember it all, but thanks to everyone for your efforts.
