Upper Brisbane River

Some pictures of the Upper Brisbane River taken from the D'Aguilar Hwy bridge.

Looking upstream

Saw a Platypus working this pool at 3 o'clock in the afternoon ( he's out and about early )

How fishy does this bank look?

The view looking downstream

Access at this location could be tricky . The landholders on both sides of this bridge have fenced right up to the concrete barrier. On the eastern approach there is a side track , but it too is fenced off at the edge of the high bank.

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=Harlin&hl=en&ll=-26.944436,152.361183&spn=0.001659,0.002401&sll=-37.860283,145.079616&sspn=1.504902,2.458191&vpsrc=6&hnear=Harlin+Queensland&t=h&z=19

Are we trespassing if we climb over these fences to gain access to this part of the river?

Cheers,
Dave.

Looks like the cocky is taking a few liberties, but unfortunately when you see some of the rubbish left & destruction caused by a few morons you start to see why they would do it.

Some pictures of the Upper Brisbane River from upstream of Linville.

Linville Road has numerous river crossings .

I put the kayak in for a look at this crossing. It is just downstream from the junction with Cooyar Creek.
http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=Linville,+Queensland&hl=en&ll=-26.745428,152.217464&spn=0.006649,0.009602&sll=-27.40739,153.002859&sspn=1.692117,2.458191&vpsrc=6&hnear=Linville+Queensland&t=h&z=17

Saw plenty of Lungfish , Turtles , Spangled Perch and Eel-Tailed Catfish .

Cheers,
Dave.

Some great looking water there thanks for sharing. I've been doing a bit of googling earthing thing along the length of the Brissie river as I have never fished it and come across a fishy looking stretch that I wonder if anyone can tell me the name of and whether it is worth venturing to. I'm on the Sunshine coast and before I venture down one day I'd like to at least be confident fish are found there. The area in question is a side creek or river that flows into the Brissie from the Patrick Estate area on the other side of the river to Wivenhoe Pocket. The access looks to be from O'Reilly Weir rd. Any ideas guys. Thanks PAT.

Pat,

I think you are talking about Lockyer creek . If you are wanting to fish the Lockyer from the junction with the Brisbane , best is to paddle up from the Brisbane river end ( launch at Shines Road from 'heart attack hill' ). Some great water in the weir itself and upstream , awesome structure , but the fish there are too well fed ( bait fish everywhere) . For pictures of Lockyer creek look in here http://www.sweetwaterfishing.com.au/Forum/index.php/topic,2187.0.html

Cheers,
Dave.

Thanks for that link and info Dave way more than I expected. I posted a reply yesterday but see it disappeared into cyber space somewhere - technology or techophobe don't know which one to blame probably the later. I printed off an aerial shot from goggle earth a couple of weeks ago that shows Keller rd just upstream from O'Reilly's running right to the waters edge to what looks like another wier. Can I launch there ? Are you able to drive over the weir at O'Reilly's or would I have to drive in from Patrick's Estate side via Roseborough Rd ? I watched the vid posted by Fitzy fishing upstream I believe or was that downstream of the wier ? Looks like the lure box needs to be well stocked and the retriever handy. Thanks again Dave a little planning and I will get in there. Cheers Pat.

You cant drive over the weir, you need to drive to either side via Patrick Estate or at the end of O'Rielly's Weir Rd.

If you're going to try launching a kayak there, both sides are possible, neither are easy. Fishing from the shore is easy enough on either side, it gets busy some weekends however, so get there early to get a spot. Many stay for the afternoon.

The video you're referring to is shot just downstream of the weir. There's only about a km of water from the weir to the junction with the Brisbane River.

Here's another video we shot at the weir highlighting the problem in the plunge pool there, but it gives you an idea if what it looks like.

Pat,

I paddled up from the river junction this afternoon . The lockyer is not flowing , but the river level is high enough to back up most of the way up to the weir. The Tilapia were again extremely thick , huge schools basking near the surface . I only took spinnerbaits with me and the forkys were jumping on them before any Bass could. I will be going back there in the next few days , I have to recover some gear that got left behind in a particularly deep section :(

Cheers,
Dave.

Thanks Fitzy and Dave. I watched that video highlighting the ineptitude of the powers that be building fish ladders suited to salmonids and was very interesting - well put together. It's not hard to see how they are less than a priority "out of sight out of mind" situation but that was sad to see that poor turtle in obvious stress. Well if the Tilapia are so thick I may have to specifically target them with the #4 weight and small flies and take a spade along. I saw what I imagine was a breeding pair on Sat. at another spot one with brilliant red fins while the other was just a drab grey like most are. We put some flies close but they spooked in the shallow water. It's a bit of a worry that many are around - a huge stocking of cod is needed  ;D ;D or something. Thanks Pat.

You can drive over the weir, you need to drive to either side via Patrick Estate or at the end of O'Rielly's Weir Rd.

Either Fitz made a typo here, or he forgot to tell you that you'll need to drive really really fast down O'Rielly's Weir Road to clear the weir.

You cannot drive over the weir, you have to fly.
