Where is that info supplied from? No press releases or updates about this from SEQWater. Is it a council road closure?

Cheers,

fitz..

Recreation Update (Wednesday, 19 January 08.00am)
Due to the recent inflows of water into lakes in South East Queensland, most Seqwater sites remain closed for various reasons relating to the flood event. There are high risks of debris and high risks of potential water quality issues in the lakes at this time.

Public safety is one of our prime concerns, and recreation sites will be re-opened as soon as it is practical and safe to do so.

Seqwater will assess the conditions at each lake before deciding whether to re-open each lake to on-water recreation activities. Please check the specific page for each of the lakes for further information.

All recreation sites at Lake Somerset and Lake Wivenhoe (including the Spillway Lookout recreation area at Lake Wivenhoe) will remain closed until further notice. Until further notice, the Lake Wivenhoe Information Centre will also be closed to the public.

Hi All,

As of yesterday 0900  (Tuesday) SEQWater in Brisbane stated that it could be three days or three weeks until the Dam is open for boating again.

They also stated that they will be doing more water quality checks today (Wednesday) and will await for the results.

Back in December 2009 and March 2010, Borumba Dam encountered moderate to heavy flooding with out any clousers or any type of water contamination etc etc.

So what has this years flood mitigation program by releasing extra surplus waters to the Mary River justify the closure of the whole dam to all aquatic sports when it has never happened before.                                               (Please excuse my spelling mistakes.)

Is this a case of someone in a Brisbane office trying to justify there job without even knowing where Borumba Dam is and the massive impact it has had on all small business that rely on the Fishing, Boating and Camping enthusists in the Mary Valley. Just about time for all of us to close up our shops, beuoctricty has let us down.

Good stuff Graeme.  Just need to get the Imbil bridge fixed to avoid the long way around for those coming from the north.  According to the council, they are on to it, but couldn't give a time.

Hey Steve, does that mean coming up thru Maleny/Kenillworth way from Brissy?

Hey Steve, does that mean coming up thru Maleny/Kenillworth way from Brissy?

Brian

The bridge which links Imbil to the main way to Gympie has been damaged in the floods.  Coming from Kenilworth, you will come into Imbil from the southern entry which is fine.  As you would head into Imbil from that route, there is a bridge off to the right which crosses Yabba creek.  This is the one that is damaged/closed.

Also worth mentioning that a few of the yabba crossings are knocked around a bit.  They were patched by local farmers awaiting council to get to them.  Council were saying that they would be getting to them soon, but I don't know when that is as they have a bit on.  I would suggest that anyone heading to Borumba just be extra watchful and drive accordingly.

Perhaps Graeme can give a better update.

Steve

Amongst all the rain, flooding, closures and everything else that has been happening lately, how has the dam been fishing for Toga and bass over the holiday period when you could get on the water? Fish shut down Graeme?

Randall.
Title: Re: Borumba Dam Access 28/01/2011
Post by: Borumba Fishing on January 28, 2011, 11:11:28 AM
Ok, road access to Borumba Dam.

Between Maleny and Kenilworth the bridge at Conondale was flooded/damaged and I am not sure if it is open or not at this stage.

Best access coming up from the South is from the Bruce Hwy at the Imbil/Lake Borumba signage just North of Federal.

From the Gympie side, Do Not Turn Right at the Imbil signage near Kandanga, just keep on going on the Mary Valley Rd towards Kenilworth for about 5 kms and then turn right onto the Imbil Rd.  The town bridge on the Imbil - Kandanga Rd is still closed.

A friend hit the Dam about 0630 this morning and was catching Togas and young Bass on soft plastics in the Yabba section but returned earlier than usual due to the water temp of the dam, in one area the reading showed the temp at 29.2c.

It appears that it will still be a couple of weeks until all settles down.

The dam is open again and very very clean looking water!! the toga were hitting surface lures like mad!! yabba creek is lookig very good too, just take it easy as a few pot holes exist and the crossings have been fixed enough for use but slow down!!

Hi Randall,

Up untill Monday, I have had reports (trusted regulars) that the Dam Temp was an issue being from 29c to 31.5c being nainly along the sides and in the creeks.

That would explain why a lot are holding deep in the main basin and in particular near the second yellow marker boy above the old cattle sheds and yards.

Now that we are experiencing cooler days and with more fresh coming down from the hills, I would expect that the water temps will return to a more reasonable fishable state.

The current local HP is still rising and with predictions of a sunny weekend, definatly worth coming up and bring plenty of Gold lures as these are still outfishing Silver Lures  (Blades/Spinnerbaits, Poppers etc).

Regards
Graeme

I was out there today and the water was very warm.  Early togas but shutdown quickly as it warmed up.  If anyone is coming, bring your yabbie pots.  Soaked mine for the three hours I fished and pulled some big redclaw (yummm).  The ones in 3-5m did much better than the shallower ones.

Plenty of pond lice came in but they were behaving well, both on the water and at the ramp.

Just take you time on the road in and use the speed signs as a guide to road conditions.  Most of the bridge crossing need to be taken with care.

Thanks Steve, will do mate. Haven't heard the term "pond lice" before I assume you're referring to PWC's? If so they can't bother you in the timber. Thanks mate,
John

Yeah pond lice = ski boats and PWCs.  I have seen them up the arms a bit - absolutely stupid.

Why can't those people go and play in the sharky water? It would at least add a new degree of difficulty to whatever they're trying to achieve.

Voltzy,

Any size to ones you grassed?

I was up Kingham and got three to 56cm (two surface and one sub).  Was suppose to be doing a bit of practice for the bass on fly comp at Maroom next weekend, so I go chasing togas :-\  I was actually testing a few fly concepts I have been working on.  Only fished the early session as I had farm stuff to do and it was only going to get hot.  Dropped the pots in on the way up and picked them up on the way back.  Garlic chillied yabby tails last night for dinner :youbeauty

By the number of pond lice trailering in when I was leaving, I think it was going to be a bit busy on the water during the day?

I should have mentioned, that I hit one tree just under the surface (no damage :)) ) and saw a couple of floaters, so everyone should just be a bit careful.

Mate 50cm would have pulled this one up, all hits under the surface, we fished surface top and film first up. MOst action was after 9 for us. we fished Yabba.
Plenty of pricks on the water too. You know the ones who slow down enough so that there wake doubles as they pass?

DRJ- he stayed inside the boat this week ;D

Can anyone tell me if the road through the Mary Valley is open or should I look at heading up the Bruce Hwy?

The Mary Valley road is open.  I travelled that way and you just need to be mindful of a few potholes due to floods.

Thanks Steve. I enjoy the drive up past the dams & then down through the Mary Valley.
Bloody potholes, there are some about the traps that need their own postcode :o
