I also just spent a week driving a research vessel (with 6 people) off and along the coast of Central Queensland using acoustic recording devices. I'll add a report on that one when I receive some e-mail material on some of the underwater recordings. There's one in particular that is quite impressive.

What an awesome trip JM!
Thanks for sharing your stories of your time up there which looked liked you'll have some long lasting memories, catching back up with Dick and Dog, taking in all that spectacular scenery, obsorbing all that rich history from our indigenous forbears and from what looked liked quite a historic tree. One can just stare and ponder at all that artwork and history of what it must have been like before white man came, life a lot less complicated to how we know it.
Chasing those Sooty's looks like great fun too and reminds me a like fishing for Australian Bass back down this way in skinny water, especially in slightly flooding conditions, using surface lures and sight casting for them. I'm yet to actually catch a SG but it is definately on my to do list. No matter what species of fish or how big, I reckon this type of fishing is such great fun.
With a 1000 km's of bank to explore I bet you wished the days you spent up there were longer.

A trip like that would put a lot of the industry/trends into perspective.

Those sootys were pretty cool, and it was good to see how their breeding cycle worked as well.

That's what it was- special. It wasn't about the fishing, barra or the like. It was a moment where I was fast tracked through time and shown some of the significant sites. Far removed from southern city life, it certainly cracked you in the right place. If done solo, I'd have seen not much. A good hearted mob that Dog and Dick Co.
Lyndon, It's all at our fingertips to fly, drive, or even bike parts of our country. I socialised at a Darwin night spot on the way home for about 5 hrs. Just watching the people, their mannerisms and welcoming nature said a lot about less stressed lives and a relaxed freedom. I chatted to a few fellas and ladies and Darwin itself is a place I wouldn't say no to moving to.

Great read and pics Johnny,sounds like a awesome experience and place and yeh the sooties are a great fish I have fond memories of chasing them around Cairns years ago.

Thanks for sharing that with us Johnny. The more I hear about Dog, the more I thinnk that if she could develop opposable thumbs, Dick would be the one sitting in the passenger seat.
