NEWS
With the river opening upon us it will be very interesting as to see if the weather behaves it’s self or we end up with rain and snow.
Rain and snow might see a late run of spawning trout, the same as what happened last year and the fishing will be “on for young and old”. Look out Trout!
Over the last week the fishing has been pretty good with the land based bait and spin methods the best it has been for years. Fly fishing has improved also over the last week.
Boat trolling was OK if you stuck to the edges and had your lines a fair way out.
At this stage it looks like the cold front will pass by early weekend at the latest and fishing should be good.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATURE
The lake continues to rise and is about 84%
Water temperatures are now about 9 degrees Celsius a drop from last week with cooler conditions this week.
Best methods to catch a trout.
Best method – Bait fishing and spinning around the lakes edges.
Best lake lure – Steve Williamson black/orange Tasmanian Devil number or Y82 has been good between 2 and 5 metres deep.
Best lake area – East Jindabyne Islands and Sids Bay is picking up.
Best fly method lake – Big black flies at night has been great.
Best River – The Thredbo River will be the pick when it opens again on Saturday
Let’s now have a look at how to catch one in a little more detail.
Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next few weeks.

Trolling.
If you don’t troll in close with your lines well out you will have difficulty catching fish.
The rainbow trout have become more active hitting lures hard and then jumping  out of the water, so sharp hooks are needed to stop the fish throwing the lure on the jump.
The fish are going to be moody as the weather fronts come though the next few days so just keep a lure in the water and the fish will eventually bite. I think we are still in winter colours so oranges and pinks are the go.
Lead core lines at two colours (20 metres) to three colours are good. (20 to 30 metres of line out will get your lure down an extra 2 to 3 metres).
There is no doubt that lead core lines were catching most of the fish in the middle of the day, over the last week with a few trout caught off the downrigger at 25 feet when it gets too bright to fish in the shallows.
The best lure over the last week has been a black and orange Tasmanian Devil like the Y82 preferably in Duel Depth (20 gram) to get a little deeper. The Y48 duel depth is also worth a try on dull days or deeper down.
New Tassies that are going well are the numbers 107 and 102.
How exciting! After lots of prays Rapala have just released the new Aussie Spotted Dog in a CD 5 and a floating 7cm and they are catching fish as well as would be expected.
We have limited lures in stock so be quick as they may become hard to get due to demand!
Good on you Rapala. The new Rapala colour Orange Tiger is also going well in the CD5 and 7.
East Jindabyne islands, Hayshed Bay, Lion and Cub Islands and the South arm have been fishing very well. (RIVERS ARE CLOSED UNTIL THE OCTOBER LONG WEEKEND always remembers however that primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you first check with the Department of Primary Industries (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers in the area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAITFISH IN RIVERS!)

Lake Bait Fishing
The best artificial baits at the moment are Rainbow Paste, Chunky Cheese, Lime twist, Sherbet and the old favorite lemon twist. Scrub worms off the bottom and a power bait dropper will be the best middle of the day for the brown trout. Bardi Grubs for big brown is also the best.
Tiger worms or scrub worms under a float have been doing very well also for rainbows and Atlantic salmon.
Best areas for bait fishing at the moment have been, Hatchery Bay area, East Jindabyne and The Claypits through to the Jindabyne Holiday Park.

Lake Spinning
Aglia Streamers and the Mepps Bugs in the shallows at dawn and dusk. Also try the Gladiator Hip Baby in gold they have also been worth a try. Blades like the Strike Pro Cyber Vibe 35and the TT Swithblade 1/8 sunset gold (any gold) are also very good at the moment.
Spin close around rocky outcrops for best results later on in the day in the day.
Use smaller lures like Celtas or Gillies Spinners around the shallow bays after dark.
Check out the new glow in the dark Vibrax spinners you will be surprised how well they work in fringe light to dark when used around the edges of the rising lake in the shallows. Have a look also at the lures that are working for the boat trollers, they also should be good from the shoreline. When working the lake edges, don’t stay in one place too long and only put in a couple of casts in each area. Keep moving!

River Spinning (Rivers Open Saturday 1st October)
I am certain that there will be plenty of water in the rivers this weekend. Rain and snow predicted beforehand so there might even be a run of trout.
If so the lure anglers should have some fantastic fishing. I m certain the new Spotted Dog Rapala will be great and even more certain the new orange tiger Rapala will also be great. Other proven colours will be the rainbow trout and brown trout and any other with a touch of orange like the perch pattern Rapala.
If the water is deep and fast try a Strike Pro Slicback jointed lure.
For discoloured water a Jaz Syclon 50mm Vibe with lots of rattle to help the trout find the lure or why not a glow Bluefox Vivrax spinner. TT Switchblade ‘Pink Bimbo will stir up a trout and in plastics a ‘Vodca and orange Strike Tiger is sure to catch a fish as well.

Fly Fishing River
I think this will be a weekend of big heavy flies like bead head Woolley Buggers and a like. Glow Bugs and weighted nymphs will also be good but if the water is running fast then you are going to also need a sink tip fly line or at least a weighted poly leader possibly fast sinking to super fast sinking.
Cant see any dry fly happening this weekend at least.

Fly Fishing Lake
The water is rising fast and the fish are just off the dropoffs and you need to fish a little deeper. Woolley Buggers or larger flies deep down will be best.
Craigs Night time and Williamson’s Goldfish have been two flies well worth using at dawn and dusk.
If you sight a fish in the shallows you may be better to cast a smaller fly than a larger fly, something like a green nymph.

For visitors to the Snowy’s we have a full range of fishing tackle for hire at my shop and fishing tours are now available.
