Title: Wivenhoe ,this Sunday 6am
Post by: Novice on June 25, 2013, 08:02:33 PM
I'm thinking of hitting Wivenhoe this Sunday morning( June 30th) for a paddle and fish.

Launch at 6am from Kipper creek( on the Wivenhoe-Somerset rd a couple of Kms before the turnoff to billies bay). Access unfortunately is only for kayaks or canoes, from the carpark it is only a short drag down the hill to the water.

Open to any sweetwater members who want to tag along. Fish until we've had enough or until the wind turns up.

Now who's keen?

Wayne,

The early start is to minimize the chance of the wind curtailing the fishing prematurely. Plus , it's been awhile since I have enjoyed a paddle on BigW first thing in the morning( remember when we you used to do that regularly?). Also it gives me the afternoon for family commitments.

Fitz, what do you reckon? You coming for a paddle on the lake? We could do the bridge to bridge next fortnight.

Cheers,
Dave.

Yes Dave I remember the 6am starts in the freezing cold and the fog so thick you were flat out seeing the GPS let alone landmarks. That's why I want to launch at midday! Time to break out the uggies and big jumper...might see you there. It will give me a chance to give the Predator a proper paddle. Owned it for 6 months and only paddled it twice with the kids in it so never even fished out of it yet.

Putting my hand up for this one too :)

Bout time I met some of you guys. Will be there in my olive outback.

Just to clarify, the launching point is the small parking area on the right side of the road (heading towards somerset) just before you go over the short bridge and the small overtaking lane that goes uphill after it?

Gunna bring my woolen socks I think!

Yep, that's the one.

I'll put some pics up when I get home from work, for those who haven't launched from there before.

Sounds like its going to be a fair size crew.... Should we do this sort of thing more often?

I like the idea of organised trips. Also gives me a great excuse to tell the missus it's a planned trip ;) Best way to learn is from others is my opinion. Know a lot about somerset but only been to bigW once and it's a very different dam.

Hope the weather holds up.  :-\ Forecast is a bit sketchy when I saw it last. As long as it isn't raining I'll be happy. Any cloud may keep the temp from dropping to brass monkey degrees overnight.

Forecast for Brisbane on Sunday is : showers with rain at times. Light to moderate SE to SW winds.

Hopefully the showers stay away for at least the morning, I'll be still going anyway. See you all there. The gates to the carpark open at 6am.

Cheers,
Dave.

Cold and wet! There had better be a bass or two there for me....

Two fish were swimming along and they ran into this wall. One turns to the other and says.....

Donut for me today, but no real biggie. Slightly wet start but it soon cleared off. 8 of us there at one point or another. Dam completely glassed out until 11am, just beautiful. I trolled deep divers most of time, targeting 20ft which had them just touching the bottom. Had a couple of light hits on the purple predatek but no hookups. Couple of others saw some action but it was pretty quiet. Didn't matter tho, was just serene on the water today, really enjoyed being there and meeting everyone. Next time we'll have to organise fish :)

It was good to catch up and meet some of you fellas. Considering the ominous weather, the day turned out quite good with the steady rain only making an appearance until after we had called it a day. Fishing wise it was slow going for me as well, with only the one Bass landed. Still, it was nice to be out on the water paddling and chewing the fat.

Thank you to all for a good morning. It was good to put some faces to names.
As it was a slow morning I managed 1 yella and 1 grunting catfish. But the paddle was well worth it.

I'm keen for to give  Moogerah a crack!  :thanks

I went to the horse paddocks quite a lot of fish scattered around but no real schools got 6 trolling none casting or jigging. Silver Hot Lips and black and silver Boomerang deep.

I headed in the opposite direction and hit the buoy line for nothing. Neither on the troll or jigging in the one decent school that I came across near one tree hill (well that's what I'm calling it anyway. More of an island with a single tree on it).

Top day on the water and good to meet some fellow sweetwaterians. (yeah just made that up)

I must say my old school Viking Predator really impressed me today. First paddle in it after owning it for 5 months. That's what happens when you have too many yaks to choose from!

Apologies for not showing up guys  :Oops). I made a last minute decision to try to recover my baitcasting outfit I lost across from Lumley Hill a couple weeks ago. Needless to say, that was a waste of time. All I managed to dredge up was one old, algae covered Redclaw pot. Still had one shrimp kicking around in it though. I definitely should have given up on the idea and joined you guys - would have learned plenty I think.

Anyway, I dragged some of my home-made deep divers around the mouth of Logans and out towards the CSIRO buoy for zip. A lot of fish on the sounder in 20-30 ft of water, but none interested in chasing lures. Clipped on a TN60 and trolled it back to Lumley for 1 possible hit, but that was it.

Stopped by the newly opened Spillway Common launching spot on the way home for a look. Of course, I spotted about 6 people fishing inside the no fishing zone across the other side.  >:( Definitely within the 100 metres as stated on the signs there. AND during closed season. One dude landed a good size Bass while I was watching from the far bank. Called the Fishwatch hotline only to leave a message. Haven't called me back yet.

Keen to catch up next time.

Cheers,
Beetle.

I have spoken with B&FP officers this morning, they did get your message but had already moved downstream & had their  hands full down there.  C:-) They were out there Sunday & issued over $8000 in fines between Wivenhoe & Mt Crosby Weir including Shines Rd, Twin Bridges. For offences including having bass in closed season, illegal apparatus & fishing in closed waters.  :Clap)

I''ve got to say, that currently the B&FP team is being very proactive on this region, far better than at any time in the past that I'm aware of.  :Clap)

BTW- a couple of the B&FP officers are members here on sweetwater, so don't hesitate to leave posts here about suspect activity, but always ring the hotline first. Won't say any names, but they are good people who really do care about our fisheries and doing a good job. Thanks fellas  :youbeauty

That's great to hear! Maybe with the funding boost from the fines the powers that be can see the benefits of continued policing. Pretty bad that people try it on, deserve everything they get imho. Good on the guys for policing it, means better "legal" fishing for all of us when the season reopens.

A pity they don't get the fines back to their department, the fines go to treasury dept, into consolidated revenue. But it all helps to pay off Qld's depts.

I did a little test thanks to google maps this morning. Doing a rough trace of the path I followed yesterday, trolling most of the time (Hobie Trawler coming through!) it looks like I did about 10.5k's for the morning!

Now that is by far and away the most peddling I've ever done in the yak! I'm not a fit bloke, and wasn't going fast, only have the standard fins on my mirage drive, legs are holding up pretty good today. Now, if you told me I was going to go out and do 5 hours of exercise, they wouldn't find your body...but fishing? You bet  :thumbsup

Still nothing on Dave who was last seen heading out to the middle of nowhere at a rapid rate of knots only to return hours later. I personally think he went to the kiosk for a cuppa..but he insists he was fishing..  :popcorn)
