Fish take a screen test

Researchers looking at ways to prevent fish being sucked into and through irrigation pumps have found that screens can help. However, the design of the screens isn’t ‘one size fits all’ and needs to take into account the local fish species likely to be affected. In a field trial, it was found that a key factor was the velocity of the water, rather than the size of the mesh used for the screen.
This is the latest in a series of research reports investigating the use of screens on irrigation pumps.
