Moreton Bay Water Quality - Advisory
« on: January 23, 2011, 06:00:59 PM »
MEDIA STATEMENT - SUNFISH QLD

In response to a media advice from Queensland Health regarding the possible contamination of the waters in and around Moreton Bay by pesticides and sewerage, Sunfish Queensland would like to provide a similar advisory.
Until the Health Department and Fisheries Queensland advise that it is again safe to eat seafood especially fish, prawns, crabs or oysters, recreational fishers should avoid consuming any seafood products sourced both recreationally or commercially from the waters in and around Moreton Bay. This includes rivers and creeks that have tidal flows that intermingle with Moreton Bay or the Brisbane River.
Queensland Health is currently taking samples for testing and will provide updates as soon as they are available.
“Queensland Health is warning floodwater from the Brisbane River discharged into Moreton Bay, could be contaminated with sewage, agricultural, industrial waste and other substances and caution should be exercised in these waters.”
Boat users are also advised to take care and avoid where possible the waters in and around the Brisbane River and the flood plume within Moreton Bay due to debris and possible submerged obstacles. If it is necessary to traverse these areas please take extreme caution, travel only in daylight and reduce your speed to prevent possible collisions.
Many thanks to all those who have been working tirelessly in the cleanup of our waterways and riparian buffers. Please remember to wear gloves and thick rubber boots and to wash your hands thoroughly when you return home.
Please take care and we will update you as soon as we have further information from Queensland Health.
