Title: Access to Stanley River Villeneuve to Woodford section
Post by: 4weightfanatic on November 29, 2012, 06:43:03 AM
I want to do a bit of yak exploring of the Stanley river around the Neurum to Stony creek section in the coming months and wondering where would be the best areas to launch. I will be hitting the river pretty early say 4.00 am when I do so preferably no abseiling ;D. I lost google earth on my PC when I upgraded to Windows 8 and the substitute Bing maps is cr@p for resolution. Cheers Pat.

You can put in where the highway crosses the river just past woodford and paddle downstream.  I've gone down as far as the Woodford Weir and up a fair ways.  You could portage around the weir and keep heading downstream if you wanted.  Park your car on the old road north of the highway just after the bridge and launch directly under the bridge.

I wouldn't advise paddling down from Woodford Weir.... Very skinny water, you end up dragging the kayak thru the often very soft silt / sand & over thu some serious log jams. I did it once & gave up on the kayak, leaving it where it was and continuing on foot. By the letter of the law I was potentially trespassing, but as no adjoining land owner asked me to leave I was ok (they couldn't see me in the scrub)

You can launch at Stoney Creek & paddle / drag down there until you hit the Stanley River, again pretty skinny & hard yakka for a km or so but there's some ok but still quite small holes where it hits the Stanley.

Alternatively you can launch at Mary Smokes Creek and paddle down to ther Stanley River there, much better water for paddling with Somerset currently full.

For Neurum Creek you can put in at Villenueve Bridge, the Neurum Creek junction is not far up from there, maybe a kilometer or so.

Here's a video I shot in the tinnie going upstream from the just past Neurum Creek, past Mary Smokes Creek and further up. You can see where Mary Smokes Crek joins at about 1:15

Thanks Dale and Fitz - Stoney creek was one of the thoughts but last time I crossed it it looked like it was living up to it's name ;D. Mary Smokes was another but I couldn't get a good enough view on the cr@p Bing maps. When I went to redownload Google Earth it got to 80-85% then just stopped. Cheers Fellas Pat.
