Over the past few weeks I have been fishing both Wivenhoe and the Bremer River and couldn't help but notice how different the fish are from the two areas. Other than the fact that the Dam bass is fatter it also has more colour, a smaller tail, and it appears to have a smaller head (not longer); same species, but they seem to evolve slightly different in their environments.

Well if you think about it, dam fish have no predators, current, tide etc. They grow out as much as they grow long, river fish have a lot more to deal with, so I guess that would lean them off! Just my thoughts but..

I'd say you're pretty much on the money there UBK. Also, many dams have vast quantities of boney bream for bass to feed up and grow fat on without much competition. One exception is Maroon dam. No boney bream there. The Maroon bass are smaller and slimmer than their Wivenhoe brethren. They need to eat crustaceans, insects and small fudge ins etc. That is why Maroon can get such a hot surface bite compared the the dams full of boney bream.

Without a doubt, the food web in the the two locations is vastly different & would be reflected in growth rates.
