AFANT CLEAN-UP OF DEAD CAR CORNER

The Daly River is one of the Northern Territory’s iconic fishing rivers; it is beautiful and in a relatively natural state.
For many years recreational fishers travelling on the Daly River have been concerned with a couple of sites where a number of old rusted car bodies have been tumbling into the river.

A small number of abandoned car sites along the river have been gradually getting closer to and in some cases tumbling into the river as the river has eroded and changed course. At one such site AFANT has undertaken a major clean up with the support of the land owner and the local community to remove the old rusted car wrecks from the river and river bank.

On the weekend of 16th August, AFANT removed 36 cars from the site with 11 of these car bodies located over the bank and resting in the main river channel.
The planned operation was designed to use an excavator to lift and move the car bodies while having as minimal impact on the river bank and on site vegetation as possible. The cars were lifted by either chain or by using a mechanical grab on the excavator to keep the bodies clear of the river bank so as to not damage or destabilise it.

AFANT would like to thank Rydar (Tuddy) Salzgeber for his great work in operating the excavator and Stuart Salzgeber for assisting with the works.
We would like to thank the community for their support in the project and the land owner Alfie and his family for providing access and permission to conduct the work.
All but one of the car bodies was removed as this vehicle was partially buried and the decision was taken that removing it had the potential to cause disturbance to the river bank.

AFANT would like to thank the following for their support and assistance for this project:
 Vista Gold Pty Ltd
 Darwin Game Fishing Club
 Palmerston Game Fishing Club
 NT Feral Pig Harvesting
 Garry Higgins MLA
 Victoria/Daly Shire Council
