Ideas flow for dam recreation review

South east Queensland residents want more recreational activities at Wivenhoe, Somerset and Atkinson dams, according to community feedback on Seqwater’s recreation review.

Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle said the review had already sparked some passionate community debate about the use of motorised boats on Wivenhoe and the need for improved access to the lake.

“This is the most extensive review of recreation of SEQ dams and catchments ever undertaken and I want to see even more people come forward with their ideas and have their say,” Mr McArdle said.

“More than 170 people attended information sessions held at Kilcoy, Esk and Fernvale last weekend, and so far 318 people have registered online for updates.

“Around 230 surveys have also been completed for all three dams.

“These recreation areas are public spaces and we want to hear from everyone involved.

“The review will need to balance the diversity of recreation activities with making sure there are no adverse impacts on water quality or the immediate catchment around those dams.

“There is still plenty of time for people to contribute their ideas on the future recreation options.”

The schedule for community consultation for the rest of Seqwater’s recreation areas are:

• Lake Samsonvale (North Pine Dam) and Lake Kurwongbah – July 2013
• Maroon and Moogerah dams – August 2013
• Ewen Maddock and Baroon Pocket – September 2013
• Borumba Dam and Lake Macdonald – October 2013
• Cooloolabin, Poona and Wappa dams – November 2013
• Clarendon and Bill Gunn (Lake Dyer) dams – February 2014
• Leslie Harrison Dam – March 2014
• Lake Manchester, Enoggera and Gold Creek dams – April 2014
• Hinze and Little Nerang dams – May 2014.

Residents are welcome to attend Seqwater’s discussion workshop on 13 July. To attend the workshop, register first at www.yourseqwater.com.au (http://www.yourseqwater.com.au) (external site) prior to 5 July.

Registered attendees will be notified via email of the venue, which is likely to be close or in Kilcoy.
