Lake Moogerah Recreation Notice
« on: September 24, 2015, 01:05:22 AM »
Lake Moogerah closed to water based activities due to water quality issues until further notice

Date: 21/09/2015   - Seqwater

As a precaution and in the interest of public safety, Lake Moogerah has been temporarily closed to all water-based recreation activities (including boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and swimming) as of Monday 21 September 2015 due to unacceptably high levels of bacteria detected in routine testing. The cause of the increase in bacteria numbers is unknown, but a similar increase occurred exactly two years ago, and this took some weeks to clear.

Signage has been erected on site advising of the temporary closure of the lake.

Seqwater appreciates that this temporary closure will disrupt visitor plans for the school holidays, however public safety is our priority. Seqwater has increased its water quality testing at Lake Moogerah, and the lake will be re-opened as soon as possible. Nearby Lake Maroon remains open to recreation, including boating, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, jet skiing and fishing. Seqwater apologises to visitors for any inconvenience caused by the lake’s closure to on-water activities.

Seqwater’s dam closure trigger levels are set against the National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines and South East Queensland-specific microbial water quality triggers developed by a panel of scientific and academic topic experts through the Healthy Waterway’s ‘Healthy Waterplay’ program.

The closure is a precautionary measure in the interest of public safety. Exposure to these bacteria levels could result in gastroenteritis-like symptoms.

On land recreation facilities and trails around Lake Moogerah are not affected by this temporary closure.

Lake Moogerah re-opened for water based recreation activities from Friday 25 September
Date: 25/09/2015   - Seqwater

Seqwater has re-opened Lake Moogerah to all water-based recreation activities, including boating, water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking and fishing, following closure on Monday due to unacceptably high levels of bacteria detected in routine testing.

The decision follows Seqwater investigations, water quality testing and consultation with national experts in water quality. Visitor safety is our number one priority and the temporary closure was a precaution until we could determine it was safe for visitor to access the water.

Seqwater appreciates that this temporary closure has disrupted some school holiday plans and we appreciate visitor patience during the closure.
