2014 Ewen Maddock Fish Stocker's Challenge Review
« on: May 20, 2014, 05:21:10 AM »
The 2014 Ewen Maddock Fish Stocker’s Challenge was held in mid-March with a fantastic show of competitors and as a result a huge success for the local fish stocking group, Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc. making the decision to hold the event over a two day period. With close to 50 competitors coming as far as Bundaberg in the north, they battled it out for a chance to win in excess of $5000 worth of prizes.

After all competitors receiving their generous entry pack upon registering after a Saturday morning pre-fish they set out for the first session of the weekend with quite a good number of Bass being caught, the largest  being 51cm in length caught by Miles Green. However it was a battle between Dave Magner and Nigel Middleton for who would take out the first session in the bass category with Nigel triumphantly upgrading his two bass for the session at a total length of 77cm after catching approximately 20 fish for the session. Paul Rolfe caught the largest Golden Perch at a length of 45cm and Aaron Prior took honors for luring an impressive 65cm Saratoga.

At the sessions end the competitors were marshaled off the water and treated to a sumptuous spit roast meal organised and provided by the stocking group while listening to music in the background by DJ Ollie! There was also some great prize give-a-ways for the night one in particular was awarded to Miles for the largest bass caught in the session which was a $100 lure pack from Sweetwater Fishing Australia thanks to the generous Mr. G Fitzgerald. Simon Carter also won the night’s mega raffle draw, kindly donated by Barra Jacks Kawana worth $500.

Sunday morning was another day and competitors were on the water at 6:00 am after a briefing, the conditions had changed and winds were strong and blew earlier than anyone had hoped or anticipated. Sam DeGraaf took out the honors of the bass category with his two legal bass of 88cm; in second place was Nigel Middleton with Dave Magner in third with his total of 64cm of Bass caught. Unfortunately no Saratoga were caught, however a couple more Golden Perch were recorded for the session.

At sessions end the BBQ was fired up while the winners of the weekend were announced with a tonne of prizes given away with every competitor walking away overwhelmed. Steve DeGraaf won a bunch of great prizes for his efforts landing the largest bass caught for the whole weekend which measured 54cm in length which was an impressive fish. Aaron Prior won the Saratoga category with the 65cm fish he had caught in session one and Paul Rolfe took out first place within the Golden Perch category. In the Bass category it was a tight finish where Dave Magner and Nigel Middleton were inseparable; however Nigel took the honors catching a total of upgraded Bass of 144cm.

Before the day concluded the lucky winner of the random prize draw proudly donated by Extreme Kayaks which consisted of a Fish Bandit Kayak equipped with a comfortable padded back rest seat and a paddle was awarded to Mick Lavelle.

EMFMI would like to thank all their generous sponsors of the event which were, Sweetwater Fishing Australia, Sun2Sea UV Protection Clothing, Bassaction.net, TT Lures, Pro-Cure bait scents and Z-Man Australia, Back Water Paddles from MLTI, Save Ya Rod, Cooper Anchors, Roscoe Canoes & Kayaks, R&V Aqualine Industries, Blade Kayak Fishing Journal, Impact Tackle, Barra Jacks and Extreme Kayaks.

Event organiser Dave Brace and member of Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc. has stated that the events succession is largely due to the dedication of the hard working members of the fish stocking group and the events sponsors who are already looking forward to next year’s competition. There has already been a discussion about a cash pool event to be organised by the group’s members for the later part of 2014, so be sure to check out their website and else where activities to get up to date information. As a result of running varied competitions in recent years changes will be made to benefit all parties, one being the registration process which has been approved by authorities and has been very much simplified, however it will be a first in first served basis for future events.

For full details of the event be sure to grab a copy of issue #15 of BLADE.

I’d also like to thank Fitzy for his ongoing support of the group, an unbelievable man with a larger passion for the future of freshwater fish in Australia.

Kind regards
Dave Brace
