Mildura lock closed for urgent repairs

23 December 2013 - MDBA

Mildura Lock 11 has been closed for urgent repairs to one of its upstream gates.

Murray–Darling Basin Authority acting chief executive David Dreverman said boats would not be able to access the lock until the repairs were completed.

“The lock can’t be operated because the timber seal on the gate has come away,” Mr Dreverman said. “We’re very conscious that there are many people using the river at this time of year so Goulburn–Murray Water staff will be working to minimise the disruption to river users.

“We expect the repairs will take at least five days, but there could be further delays if we can’t get hold of the necessary materials or services due to businesses being closed for the Christmas holiday period.” Mr Dreverman said the repair work would involve putting a bridge across the lock so a crane could access the lock island to lift the gate out.

He said the water level in the Mildura Weir pool would not be affected by the repairs.

Boat operators and other river users are advised to take this lock closure into account when planning their activities on the river.

The MDBA and Goulburn–Murray Water will issue another media release when the repairs are completed.
