hungry bass?
« on: December 17, 2013, 07:51:47 AM »
I thought I would get in before the schools go on hols so yesterday  spent 6 hours fishing in very recently burnt out bush in a local National Park and even though I had the camera did not record any photos....the reason being the fish would have been highly embarrassed to be photoed  in their condition - they were like some of the ultra thin models you see (or hardly see) in women magazines!
I caught about 10 fish, all over 30 - biggest was 37, but every one of them, without exception, had an extremely un-filled out belly - not like the fatties I usually get in this location.   I put it down to being because grass and foliage on the banks was totally burnt and there was little insect population.    In some un burnt sections the cicadas were in full voice and wonder if there might have been different results there IF there was river in those areas.  The water had an almost metallic hue to it.   Also I would have thought the fish would have been attracted to any chance of a meal and attack all offerings (all caught on surface ones) but , even though I had a goodish day they only showed fair interest but not frenzy  - lots of follows, and swirls especially on the pause.
Has anyone experienced similar conditions?
Christmas greetings to all ....

You were fortunate to find fish there after a bush fire.  Quite often during a fire, or at the first decent rain after a fire the amount of ash washed into the water causes major fish kills by depriving them of oxygen.
