Title: Fitzroy upstream of Rocky
Post by: Junglefisher on February 17, 2012, 11:48:17 AM
Has anyone fished the Fitzroy by kayak upstream of Rocky?
Looks like a nice big river with a few access points.

Not in a Kayak, but certainly in a boat, but more than 20 years ago now. Catch was mainly eel tails. Used to access the river well upstream up near the Caves somewhere. Popular waterski spot as well, even though salties are not uncommon.

G'day Mate

I live on Plentiful Creek Rd, The Caves. (25kms North of Rocky). At the end of Plentiful Creek Road there is access to Alligator Creek (Google earth it). Nice spot with plenty of room to fish off the bank or launch your yak. The Fitzroy River is about a 6 klm run from here.

I often hit it in the tinny to catch bulk catties for crabpot bait. I've been for a couple of runs in my Yak down there. No barra landed yet, However there are plenty there to be caught. ALSO LOTS OF BIG LIZARDS. BE WARNED. We have caught Long tom, Tarpon, Catties, turtles all the usual suspects.

All the skiing goes on at the mouth of Alligator Creek which is known as Belmont ramp.

Its a truly massive system and one would never ever explore it all in a lifetime. (Not in a Yak anyway)

Thanks Binder and Jono.
I wasn't aware there were many crocs up there, was hoping to find a croc free spot.
Not that crocs are a deal breaker, it's just nicer to paddle without them. Might have to take my friend "Marlin" with me if I go there.
Jono, if you're ever up for a kayak fish, let me know - maybe send a pm? I can only get out weekdays and occasional weekends. I've been in Corio, coorooman, causeway and waterpark so far.

Thanks for the info Jono as I was wanting to know a bit more about Alligator Ck after crossing it a couple of months back.

It looks so fishy, I wouldn't have guessed there are big lizards up there though. :thanks

Cheers Dave

:-\ "Alligator Ck" that should be some clue to the undecided shouldn't it  ::)
I wouldn't be Kayaking in fresh or salt water anywhere above Bundy, but maybe I am just a big girl under this many exterior  :))

There's a lot of places with names like that from the old days, before the crocs were shot out in the area. Some have repopulated, some haven't - often depending on the locals attitudes towards crocs.
I've paddled with crocs a few times before now and whilst I'm never comfortable about it, it's something I'm willing to accept. I actually saw a decent croc up Coorooman creek the other day. It was swimming upstream and as it surfaced for breath, the water was rushing over it's head like a rapid.

Mate you got BIG BRASS ones.  Wouldn't catch me doing that.  I've had lots of close encounters(all be it non-eventful) in the tinny and reckon that is something I ain't gonna tangle with.. :o :P

Hope you get some fish in there though   ;D
