Title: Mid - Brisbane River
Post by: Sweetwater on October 19, 2013, 08:03:07 PM
Was down at Burton's Bridge this afternoon checking out the river, didn't take a rod, just looking. Was disgusted to see rubbish, dumped tree off-cuts and even a used tampon and soiled toilet paper left laying on the ground. Filthy b@stards.....

While cleaning up the rubbish a fellow came paddling past. Said he had caught 6 bass for the afternoon. Showed me pictures on his phone from last week of a 58cm bass caught up stream of Kholo Bridge.

As I was already thinking, those who think that the only place to hit the mid-Brisbane River is the Lockyer Junction Hole are narrowing their focus too much. From my past experiences, spring often produces better fish further down stream as many mature fish that have migrated downstream in winter and then move back up in summer. Anyhow, I'm paddling Twin Bridges to Burtons Bridge tomorrow, might even take a rod and see what's about.

Was that the tagged one? Haven't heard any reports of big ones below Crosby since the closed season.

Ashley Kirkup got a tagged 58 in the river recently.  It was tagged in Somerset in 1996.

There was a bass tagged on 26 of October in 1996, it was tagged and released in lake somerset at 26 cm long, caught in the kholo area caught on the 14th. It's good to see a few still around :)

An interesting one was the Somerset fish tagged at 330mm in 1997 and caught this month in the river at 440mm.  Sort of throws the growth rate charts out a bit.

Not if it has been in the river since 2000 and it is a male, only valid growth rate data is for fish tagged and recaptured in the same impoundment but even that does not take sex into account.
One recently caught tagged fish in the Noosa River was tagged in Poona Ck. Hervey Bay could have come from anywhere before it ended up in Poona that is far more interesting than growth rates for many reasons.

In the above thread from 2011, there are some interestingly slow growth rates mentioned as well from the middle Brisbane.

Should see how slow the growth rates are in the Noosa Dave. Growth rates vary according to environment, in the oligotrophic lotic Noosa they are very slow. In lentic eutrophic or hypereutrophic impoundments they are very fast.

In an engrish nutshell....

Small water generally = slow grow. Lakes, especially the larger lakes = better growth rates.

Males are tend towards slower growing & often ultimately smaller than females.

Overall bass are terribly slow to grow compared to most other stocked native fish, yellas, barra, sooties, cod etc. But compared to bream in the wild they're good....

Sorry I was doing two things at once.
Lotic = running water, streams. Oligotrophic = water that is low in nutrients.
Lentic = still water. Eutrophic = water that is high in nutrients.

I caught a tagged one in 2011, it was tagged back in 3/10/98  in Sumerset and a growth of 130mm. I was into tagging back then and tagged over 80 below the Crosby weir (yes 400m below), haven't checked for some time but I only had a handful of recaptures reported. Tried to log back on but cant remember my login. Would an old bass growth rate change much going from dam to river etc?
