BELUBULA DAM INVESTIGATIONS UNDERWAY

Water NSW is considering potential dam sites on the Belubula River in order to improve water security in the Lachlan Valley, Deputy Premier Troy Grant and Minister for Natural Resources, Lands and Water Kevin Humphries said today.
The investigations will include consultation with key stakeholder groups in the valley, and high level studies into the environmental, economic, engineering and community benefits and impacts.
Mr Grant said the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government had made a firm commitment to deliver a feasibility study for a dam on the Belubula River in this year’s State Budget.
“This Government is committed to delivering the water infrastructure that will prepare our regional communities for drier conditions in the future, while also boosting regional populations and agricultural productivity,” Mr Grant said.
Mr Humphries said the NSW Government had initiated the studies as part of the Water Security for Regions program.
“The millennium drought exposed water security as a significant impediment to economic growth in the Lachlan Valley,” Mr Humphries said.
“I have met with local landholders on this issue and I understand the absolute importance of not just improving water security in the Lachlan Valley, but making sure the right site is selected.
“The NSW Government has asked State Water to conduct a high-level analysis of options to improve water security in the region and produce recommendations to the Government by December 2014.”
Water NSW CEO David Harris said the study will consider a proposed dam on the Belubula River as well as a number of other sites in the Lachlan River system.
“Potential dam sites will receive due consideration and evaluation as the process eventuates,” Mr Harris said.
“Any dam recommended in these initial investigations would be subject to further feasibility and concept studies as well as a full examination of the environmental, heritage, engineering and community considerations.
“We have made initial contact with some of the key stakeholders who will be consulted during the study.”
Further information on the investigations is available on the State Water website www.statewater.com.au/belubulainvestigations.
