Redlands community invited to help clean up Leslie Harrison Dam
17 October 2014   - Seqwater

Seqwater, along with State Member for Capalaba Steve Davies, is hosting the inaugural Leslie Harrison Dam Clean Up Day on Saturday, 1 November.

Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Peter Dennis encouraged the Redlands community to support the special event which aimed to create a better environment for one of the region’s water sources.

“Also known as Tingalpa Reservoir, Leslie Harrison Dam is part of South East Queensland’s drinking water supply,” Mr Dennis said.

“While the bulk of the region’s water supply is provided by North Stradbroke Island Water Treatment Plant and along the Eastern Pipeline Interconnector, Leslie Harrison Dam continues to play an important role as a key water source for the region.

“So it is crucial we protect this water source for current and future generations.”

Mr Davies said the Leslie Harrison Dam Clean Up Day would kick off at 9am, with volunteers gathering at the end of Howlett Road, Redlands.

“Seqwater rangers will be on hand to provide bags and gloves to the community,” Mr Davies said.

“I encourage all volunteers to be sunsmart by wearing sunscreen, a hat, long-sleeved shirt, and long trousers. Enclosed footwear or boots are also recommended.

“After the clean-up at midday, a barbecue lunch will be provided for all participants.”

Seqwater has recently lowered the water level of Leslie Harrison Dam as part of its Dam Improvement Program.

Mr Dennis said the dam lowering would enable further investigations to determine the scope and timing of a future upgrade.

“The lower water level provides us with a good opportunity to give the site a good clean-up and help keep this catchment as clean as possible,” he said.

“Keep an eye out for more information about Seqwater’s Pest Fishing Day, which we will be holding at Leslie Harrison Dam on November 16 in an attempt to rid the dam of the pest species, tilapia.”

Community members wishing to participate in the clean-up can register by emailing events@seqwater.com.au.

Why post this here after the massive back flip and flagrant misrepresentation of the public consultation process.  What happened to the promise of opening this dam to the public instead of reserving it for the silvertailed waterfront residents?  Do SEQWater really expect the locked out anglers to go and clean up the cr@p that could only have come from those waterfront residents?  What sort of pelican is this State Member?

So much potential.
Tilapia comp will be interesting, big suckers in there and not shy.

Would achieve more by allowing a community stocking group to start putting native predator fish in. Turn tilapia into big fat bass.

But for that to happen, the general public will need to have fair, consistent and reasonable access, not just the "chosen few" or restricted to one place or just on chosen days.
This could be the first step in the process...

It is a shame that the review process was canned as it would have been a good place for like minded people to get together and formulate some ideas and possibly the formation of a stocking group.
Local Councillors and state members only interested in passing the buck.
The ideal time to provide any infrastructure is when the dam levels are down.
 Cheers
Ray
