New dam strategy set to waste valuable dam water

New dam strategies to protect Queensland homes

Hundreds of families in Brisbane and Ipswich could be spared the heartache of watching their homes devastated by floods thanks to improved management of the south east’s dams.

Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle today released new operational strategies for the Wivenhoe, Somerset and North Pine dams to minimise possible flooding ahead of the summer wet season.

“There is no question the region will see major flooding in the future and the Newman LNP Government is committed to doing everything it can to improve our resilience to natural disasters,” Mr McArdle said.

“The government’s strong 30 year plan for the water sector – WaterQ – recognises the challenges we face from climate variability and natural disasters, such as floods and drought.”

“In simple terms, the strategies allow more storage space in the dams to better cope with flood waters.

“In the case of Wivenhoe Dam, more water will be released earlier to minimise flooding.

“This could mean about 500 to 1,500 fewer buildings in Brisbane and Ipswich would be flooded in a repeat of the 2011 flood.

“At North Pine Dam the maximum water supply storage will be set at 90 per cent for up to 20 years.

“The Newman LNP Government is committed to making Queensland a safer place to live, work and raise a family and these measures mean communities will be better protected when flooding strikes again.”

The Wivenhoe Somerset Dam Optimisation Study (WSDOS) and the North Pine Dam Optimisation Study (NPDOS) were recommended by the Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry.

Seqwater chief executive Peter Dennis said the studies followed the most comprehensive analysis of dam operations in flood scenarios ever undertaken in south east Queensland.

Mr McArdle said the new Wivenhoe Dam strategy could result in some bridges, such as Colleges Crossing near Ipswich, being closed more regularly when it floods and warned that it was impossible to prevent all flooding in Brisbane and Ipswich.

“All floods are different and the Wivenhoe and Somerset dams are both upstream of Lockyer Creek and the Bremer River and cannot protect us from floods coming down those watercourses,” Mr McArdle said.

The Department of Energy and Water Supply is finalising a preliminary investigation into potential new dams and the raising of Wivenhoe Dam, with the findings due to be completed before Christmas.

This is a knee jerk reaction which will lead to less water security and the un-necessary flooding of low laying bridges & crossings down stream of the lakes mentioned above. Residents in these areas will be cut off for no reason other than to give a few hours grace to houses built in flood prone areas further downstream. There is still a misconception that the Wivenhoe Dam can control the water flowing down the Lockyer Creek, this is a myth.
I hope the majority of residents in SE Qld fully understand that as a result of this policy, they will have earlier & longer water restrictions and possibly more expensive water bills because of the poor town planning that allowed houses to be built in flood prone locations.
The Wivenhoe Dam simply cannot be all things to all people. Having an each way bet (Water storage AND flood mitigation) will only see the dam fail in a dual purpose role as happened in 2011 floods and almost failed as a water storage when it was down to a around 15 percent in the drought just a couple of seasons before. This dam needs to be one or the other......

The thank you is not for Mccardle but for the editor. Mcardle has also stuffed North pine by reducing the FSL to 90%.
Why not raise the height of the river crossings that are affected by the increased flows?
Cheers
Ray

Would this new procedure have helped in 2011?  I think not.

One day, a repeat of the 1893 flood event or the 1841 flood will occur. Then Wivy won't be in a case of flood mitigation but the engineers will be flat out stopping the dam from being washed away.

The 2011 event showed that the dam can rise very quickly even with all gates open to their full extent. The people living in historically flood prone areas downstream will continue to bury their heads in the sand and blame everyone else for their loss when the next event occurs.

Tully's house has been flooded at least twice now, once in 1974 and once in 2011.  You'd think he'd have figured it out wouldn't you?

What s#%ts me off the most is this class action. IMF is a global company that makes a pile of money funding lawyers to accumulate those who think they are hard done by, to take on governments or big corporations. I heard in one article their 'take' of any winnings is as high as 60% of the payout.

It rained lots, get over it.

Yes, the lawyers will get 60% next will be the insurance companies getting their money back, and then the whiners who bought their homes on the flood plain will get some small change.
