Time for a new paddle
« on: August 22, 2011, 08:35:49 PM »
Have being using a carlisle simply magic paddle for past few years, need to buy a new paddle so tandem can be used aswell as p13 when fishing with mates or kids
So time for a upgrade to use with the p13. Two questions?
Does Charltons stock paddles as going there on Sat for a look?
Also any suggestions what i should look at, as not sure what to look for as far as paddle shape or weight and what differance they make?
 :thanks

Not sure if they stock a heap but usually have some in stock.

They can order in for you.

Best to give Craig or Tri a call and check what they have. 3818 1704

The
Carlisle's seem to be the budget glass paddles in most joints these days.
I've never used one, personally I dont like the look of the blade angle on them, but lots of people seem to use them quite successfully with no complaints. Having seen what is around in the shops, its highly likely you will end up more or less matching your existing paddle, not much choice available.

You can step up from the Simply Magic to a Polar paddle. These are glass filled blades = stiffer = less power bleed off, or go one step further to a Arctic paddle which is carbon fibre, better again.

If you're using a paddle for mutiple kayaks, give some thought to getting one with a Smart Shaft. These are 2 piece which can be adjusted anywhere from 215cm long to 225cm and any angle between the blades you like. Turn the locking nut & its locked in place, unlock pull apart to 2 pieces for storage.

Cheers

Thats your choice brother/

I use a 185 cause I am a lazy bugger. Move lots of water and lots of weight(I am no shrinking violet) with a slow paddle stoke.

Some like narrow ones as they need less force to pull through the water, but to me that is more paddle strokes.

You a big fella, average or small?

But does your kayak move? Physics 101. Every action has an equal and opposite blah blah blah.
The principle of paddles is that they stay where they are and move minimally. You dig it in and pull yourself and kayak up to the paddle. Moving paddle: wasted energy. Big paddle: more power. More potential energy: more energy expended: tire quicker.  Big blades are great for acceleration and manouvering in whitewater. Everything is a trade off. I'm speaking more from a kayaking point of view than a kayak/fishing one.
Some serious kayak people swear by "greenland" paddles, much longer paddle face but very slim. Personally, I know I'm not good/fit enought to benefit from an exy paddle. If I ever get fit again I'll get rid of my carlisle rip-off.
Cheers John.

I'm running a 160 polar with smart shaft. I use that width so that I'm feeling better at days end, I'm not in a race so I don't need a paddle with as much bite... 175 is probably more popular

Cheers,
