The pop over rev and rattle sounds maybe ok when you said it has oil still.
So when you get home
Pull the outlet from the turbo to the aftercooler off, if it full of oil then we are on a start.
You will need to remove the after cooler / intercooler cause it will be full of oil.
What sort of RPM did the engine get to?
Anyway, remove the oil filter and cut it open. Get the pleated material in a vice and give it a squeeze. When all oil out have a look at the paper element. Any metal???
If ok then replace the filter and change oil.
You could then bypass the turbo / or remove and start to see if its ok. If you remove then put the turbo feed down the turbo drain.(or it wil get real messy.Start the sucker up, sound ok??
Wont have any power but will give you an indication.
It may be just a case of a turbo seal. Anyway, would fix cheaply if ok and then make the big decision weather to keep or flick.
There is enough turbo repairers around.

Thanks Steve, after talking to my cousin & brother in law who have both been mechanics, I had myself convinced it was just a blown turbo. Spent $320 getting it towed back to my mechanic only to find holes in the top of two pistons :o 2nd hand motor going in this week, can't justify the extra expense of a recon engine.
Oh well, that puts a dent in my lure buying spree this weekend.

Sad story Andrew, but that motor was never a great success for Nissan. The older 4.2 was a better motor even though it tended to blow a bit of soot. You could turbo the 4.2 provided you kept the boost down to around 6lb the are still a good honest engine. The injectors have to be serviced every 100,000km , but if you look after them they literally go for ever. Cheers, John
