Title: Estuary Perch
Post by: BG on February 26, 2012, 06:57:06 AM
Just wondering if I heard correctly while watching Ifish the other day.
They had caught an EP at around 30cm and said it would be aprox 25 years old, would this be correct ?

They are a close cousin to the Bass, which from my understanding (limited) would reach this age in a few years.

Wouldn't they have similar age/growth rates.

Not unless it was very stunted, I'd reckon 2 to 5 years old at that size. Depending on local conditions.

I saw a river bass that was 23cm aged at being 7 years old. In a lake with good fish a bass can get that size in a year. I've got no idea on Estuary Perch however....

I think grow may be dependant upon local conditions; water temperatures, food, water quality, flow regimes, suitable habitat and possibly even local genetic variations ie some smaller systems bass may breed at a smaller size / age......

Cheers,

As a comparison, I'm 6'2" and Fitz is 3'9".  I'm a few years older than him, but I'm pretty sure even if Garry lived another 50 years he wouldn't get to 6'2".  Take that into consideration when looking at growth rates of fish.
