in a month ill be doing some barra fishing, i have no idea about what gear/ fishing outfit to use i was wondering if you guys could give me a hand thanks.

Tough call. What sort of Barra fishing will you be doing? Lakes, rivers? Qld, NT?

On second thoughts, the best thing I could advise is, get a charter. Doesn't matter where you're going and how you're fishing, find a local guide. Most will supply gear and teach you more than what you could learn off 100 forum posts.

Well I was actually going to get a charter for one day to show me the best locations to fish on that lake and also to wet a line, but as I'm staying at the lake for 2 weeks I wanted to spend most of that time fishing and I can't without my own gear so what would you suggest, oh I'm fishing in Queensland :youbeauty

A decent 6-8kg Baitcast rod with a good reel, Daiwa Zillion or Shimano Chronarch. 30 to 50lb braid and 60 to 80lb leader. Buy the best you can afford.

there is one more thing i need help with, the daiwa zillion says it has a line capacity of 14 & 16 pound and putting 30lb braid on there isnt that going over the line capacity?

Line capacity normally tells you how much line the reel will hold of a certain capacity. I've got Zillions running up to 50lb braid, and as long as you don't try to put 50lbs of pressure on it all will be well.

If you get a charter, and then spend the next two weeks fishing the spot the guide took you to, expect to get rocks chucked at you. The idea of the guide is to learn what to do, not just go back to his spots. Ask him why you're fishing in that spot. It will be either depth contour, wind direction, weed bank or something. Then go looking for another spot which offers the same conditions.

i wont just be at the spot the guide takes me to ill be changing location so i dont think there will be any rocks thrown, thanks for your help.

Lake fishing.... depends on which 'lake' your fishing and if you have a boat or are landbased.
Work the edges , shallows with surface lures , shallow and medium divers. 8-12cm lures. Travel quietly.
lf you have a sounder troll medium and deep divers.

Thats right, if you just want to know the spots, you just follow someone elses charter ;)

Following someone else's charter and see where they fish wont necessarily get you fish :X you need to know what to fish with when to fish with it how to retrieve certain lures to create a bite and read changes in the system while doing all this and if need be make the right move to certain chosen locations at the right times,I've had people try to do this to me for years both in fresh and salt water and I've never seen too many of them have a lot of success,there's more to catching Barra than just following someone ;D

Gear wise if you go for spin, I use a Shimano raider 5-8kg 7ft paired with a Shimano Stradic ci4 4000 running 30lb finns braid using 40-60lb leader. I also use a bait caster, but thats been covered :)
I am no where near a good barra fisho, but that's the sort of gear I got recommended when starting out too.
