47,000 more reasons to go fishing in the Capital Region
The waterways of the Capital Region received a boost at the start of February with the release of over 47,000 Murray cod fingerlings.
Jointly funded by the National Capital Authority and the Canberra Fisherman's Club, 37,000 cod were released into Lake Burley Griffin, following on from a release of 100,000 golden perch in 2011.
President of the Capital Region Fishing Alliance, Shane Jasprizza said that local anglers should thank the NCA for authorising the release and for their ongoing work to help improve recreational fishing in the ACT.
"A recent study released by the Murray Darling Basin Recreational Fishing Council has shown anglers spend around $1.3 billion annually in the Basin" said Mr Jasprizza.
"Enhancing our fishing opportunities for native species here in Canberra will see more people fishing locally instead of spending their money travelling outside the ACT".
A further 10,000 Murray cod will be released into the Queanbeyan River, thanks to funding provided by the Queanbeyan City Council.
Native fish habitat in the Queanbeyan River will soon receive a boost as well, after the CRFA secured a $20,000 grant from the NSW Government's 2012 Habitat Action Grants. The funding will go towards resnagging and replanting a section of the river within the town limits, with work scheduled to commence later this year.
"The stocking of the River and the habitat restoration tie in well together and hopefully the environment and the Region's anglers will both benefit into the future" said Mr Jasprizza. "The CRFA is committed to the ongoing enhancement of recreational angling opportunities in the Capital Region" he added.
The Murray cod fingerlings were supplied from the Uarah Fish Hatchery at Wagga Wagga.
