My New Paddle Yak -Sneak Peek, OK Prowler Ultra 4.3
« on: August 19, 2011, 10:25:05 PM »
Folks

I picked up the newly released Ocean Kayak Prowler Ultra 4.3 today. After paddling the Ultra 4.7 last year I am keen to do some kilometres out on the water in this new kayak.

This kayak measures 4.3m in length, .74m width, weighs in at 29.7 kg and has a capacity of 195kg. The Ultra 4.3 with rudder will be the only version on sale in Australia. The Ultra 4.3 is a new model to the range being a more compact and lighter version of the previous model with some brilliant new features.

Features like a Multi Brand Fit Transducer Scupper meaning not only will the Humminbird Fish Finders fit this kayak you will now have choice of brand with the Scupper being compatible to other brands such as Lowrance and others.

A complete new design of seat where the Seat pad and back rest are permantly mounted to the kayak. Not only allowing maximum comfort with the adjustable backrest but cutting down of set up and pack up time. I did have a test paddle last Saturday and I can report that the seat is extremely comfortable.

The front hatch has a much easier feel about it to take the hatch cover on and off the kayak, there is very snug water proof seal and a easy to operate lock that makes sure the hatch cover will never come of in rough water. This is a huge improvement on previous models in the Prowler Range.

Behind the seat there are four rod holders. Two molded in rod holders and two factory fitted flush mounted rod holders. Talking of flush mount rod holders there is still the two gunwale rod holders mounted mid ship in the cockpit area as well as a spot to mount a scotty rod holder mount forward of the centre hatch area towards the bow of the kayak. You really are spoilt for choice for rod holder positions on this kayak.

Also behind the seated area of the kayak on the front wall to the rear well there is an access hatch to an area under the seat, the word from Ocean Kayak is that this area can be used for the storage of batteries for your electronics. The kayak has the same large rear well and this will still take the optional ice box that is designed to suit the Ultra 4.7

The central hatch continues to have the feature where it can be turned 180 degrees for safe storage of your electronics for making you way through rough water. The hatch lid  is virtually the same as the Ultra 4.7 but this time on the exposed side of the hatch there is more mounting points to attach a rod mount, three in total. As with the 4.7 there is the spot on the hatch cover to mount your Fish Finder.

The same rudder sytem has been carried over from the Ultra 4.7, with running lines to lower and raise the rudder while in the seated position from the cockpit.

This kayak is available in a choice of three colours, Lime, Mango and Camo.

Having seen all three colours now I am impressed.

The lime colour has been available in the Ocean Kayak Range in the USA for some time and it is good to see that Ocean Kayak NZ/AU have released this colour over here after alot of requests from Australian kayakers. I have the Mango colour and it is a colour to be seen, I am very impressed with the colour and these two colours mentioned will offer great on water visibilty from other water users.

I only had time for a few late photos today before it it got dark in its unassembled state. But in the next day or so I plan to add a Fishfinders , a Sail and a few other bits and pieces, so stay tuned. for more pics.

How do you go lifting that on your 4wd Sel ?

I imagine it would glide and track like a bullet.

Thanks for sharing

Steve

I have extender bars mounted to the front roof bar. When extended this makes the front bar protrude from the edge of my 4wd.  This enables me to first lift the front on the kayak onto the extended part of the bar, resting it there I go to the stern of the kayak and lift it up while moving to the centre of the kayak and sliding it across onto both the front and rear bar. All Roof Bar manufacturers offer a system of some sort that is similar to mine.

Or Ask for a lift from your fellow kayakers, thats the easy way :youbeauty

And yes it does glide and track like a bullet........

Cheers

Looks like the same hatch that is on the back of my Camden.

What is your roof rack extention Sel? I looked at the Rock N Roll recently, still not decided on an extention. Been waiting to get a look at the new stuff coming from Malone.

I'll be having a test paddle of the 4.3 at the Wivenhoe Event in a few weeks, Lindsay said there will be demo boats available.  :thumbsup

Cheers,

I suppose thats not that bad ... it would be getting drastic if you had to use a hullovator like Toni  :P She will have me for that  :Hunting) . That doesnt sound like too much trouble anyway Sel.

Hope the Camden is going well Fitzy.

Well I have seen them retail for around 2400 for the kayak only. But I do know that Steven M who is a member here has his lime green one for sale on the kayak forums with the icebox for $1800. The Icebox retails for $400 alone.  Most shops I think retail them for around $1995 now

Cheers

hm, thats do-able  ;D Wonder if they do a suburban camo version that blends in with the mower and whipper snipper so the missus wouldn't notice it in the shed

Dave

its lime green which is more like a spring green so its like the colour of your grass right now.

If anyone is interested, Sel is correct and I am passing my on for the measly sum of $1800 with the ice box, which is about a $1000 buck saving from retail.
