Students gone fishing at the zoo
27 Mar 2012 - NSW Primary Industries

Today, over 130 students from Red Bend College have converged on Taronga Western Plains Zoo to take part in World Water Day activities including fishing workshops, learning how to assess the health of an ecosystem and the importance of wetlands.

Students will rotate through three workshops across the day. The first sees Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) Fisheries Officers and Fishcare volunteers providing tips on rod rigging, knot tying and fishing rules and regulations as well as catch and release handling techniques.

“These workshops are designed to teach responsible fishing practices to kids, providing an experience that is both educational and fun”, said NSW DPI Education Officer, Brett Smith.

“Funds from the NSW Recreational Fishing trust are used to fund community engagement fishing workshops as part of the NSW Government commitment to teaching children about sustainable recreational fishing and habitat conservation.”

The Zoo’s Education Officers will lead additional workshops in an outdoor classroom where students will meet a crocodile, learn about why wetlands are important and how to ensure an ecosystem is healthy.

“Today the students are getting a hands-on learning experience that will provide them with the knowledge and skills to help conserve our environment in particular wetlands, rivers and lakes,” said the Zoo’s Senior Education Officer, Kristy Robberts.

“It is important that students are aware of the things that will affect the environment and our waterways so they can take action and make better decision to ensure a positive impact on the environment.”

“Students will also undertake an Asian wetland tour where they will see the Greater One-Horned Rhino, Otters and Siamang Apes, discovering the benefits of eco-tourism for people and how this helps to conserve wildlife,” said Kristy.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s Education Centre provides interactive learning experiences both in the classroom and outdoors for 13,000 primary and secondary students every year.
