NEWS
The Snowy Mountains Trout Festival starts on Saturday and for more information go to www.troutfestival.com
Those anglers fishing Lake Jindabyne will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of water in the lake and yes it’s still rising!
The biggest problem shore based anglers will have will be all of the grass and weed around the lake edges that you can snag lines in. Biggest tip is to look for the steeper drop offs and use floats.
Boat anglers will also find the fish hiding amongst the snags in the shallows and that means a few lure must be lost to get better results when trolling.
Yes we have been getting some good fish over recent weeks and those anglers that spend time on the water will get good results.
As normal for the Trout Festival week the weather will have the major say in what days fish best and yes there will be good days and bad days during the week.
Water temperatures have still been below normal and a lot will depend on just how warm this week gets and just how much the water warms to just how active the fish will be.
At least there are more insects about now and there are days when there are a lot more fish rising.
All in all it should be a good week of fishing ahead.
Not a lot of change from last weeks report but here are a few tips for anglers fishing the Snowy Mountains Trout Festival.

BOATING WARNINGThere is also a lot of weed and stuff floating around and be VERY careful boating as there are all so lots of logs in the water. Watching all the debris coming down the Thredbo on Saturday would mean that will all be
floating around the lake.
Gaden Trout Hatchery Open Day
Gaden Trout Hatchery are having their open day on Saturday 6th November between 10am and 4pm.
For more information please call 64513400.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATUREThe reported level at the moment is about 78% and rising.  The water temperature has risen to11 degrees C which is still colder than last year by a few degrees.
Have a look at the photos on my web site and you will see just how high the water level is.

Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next few weeks.

Trolling. With the lake level rising so much there is plenty of weed and grass in the water so you need to keep an eye on your lures. This weed will be a problem for as long as the lake continues to rise.
The fish are still about but have more water between them and you just have to trust your fish finder, locate the trout and then work them until you get a strike.
Trolling small minnow lures off the lead core lines through the shallows at sunrise and sunset is producing the browns, rainbows and the odd Atlantic salmon.13 gram Tasmanian Devils are still going with possibly yellowing lures better now, with Y82 very popular. The best for me this week has been my own black one side and orange the other yellowing Tasmanian Devil in the Duel Depth. That lure has caught most of the bigger browns up to 8 lb.
Jointed Rapalas, maybe with a touch of orange like the perch pattern, are well worth a try first up and when trolled in close to the shore and over weed beds there is a good chance of a big brown trout or Atlantic salmon. Also give some of the new blades a try, we have a good selection in our shop – most resemble the gold fish we have in our lake and the trout are hitting them hard.
The Y48 or Holographic duel depth is worth a try on dull days or deeper down.
You don’t have to fish these deep at the moment you just have to be in the right place at the right time
East Jindabyne islands, Hayshed Bay, Lion and Cub Islands and the South arm have been fishing very well.
Lake Bait Fishing  (Primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you first check with the Department of Primary Industries (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers in the area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAITFISH IN RIVERS!)
A few dragonflies about now, a few fish caught on Mudeyes but the water need to warm a little yet to get the fish to really take mudeyes. Anglers are reporting that most of the trout have still been caught off the bottom.
You can fish mudeyes off the bottom – call into my shop and we will show you how to set up your lines.
Scrub worms off the bottom and a power bait dropper has been best over recent days and some big fish are being caught. The big secret at the moment is to fish with bail arm open and make sure you grease the line to make sure you keep it out of the slime on the bottom of the lake.
Best areas for bait fishing at the moment have been, The Haven, Curiosity Rocks Waste Point, The Snowy Arm and East Jindabyne pumping station.

Lake Spinning Plenty of snags in the water now with the lake rising and I have found the easier spinning is around the deeper drop offs. Jointed minnows are still well worth throwing and working the drop off for best results again use the smaller sizes now. Any trout pattern lure should be worth a try.  It is also well worth trying a few small spinners like Celtas or Gillies spinners in the shallows, be careful of snags, but make sure you keep out of sight and it is better to spot the fish and cast past it bring the lure about a metre or two in front of the fish.
Anglers are also having good success using blades that resemble the goldfish we have in the lake.
Some of the better blades are TT Switchblade ‘Golden Boy’, Strike Pro Cyber Vibe 35 BLG and Cyber Vibe 50JU009.
Tasmanian Devils are catching fish in the deeper water by casting and waiting for the lure to sink a little before a slow retrieve. Cast as far out as you can but best results will be when the water is choppy with a little wind. Yellow wing Tassies are again doing best on the sunny days.
Spin close around rocky outcrops for best results later on in the day in the day and use smaller lures like Celtas or Gillies Spinners or the Vibes around the shallow bays after dark. Don’t stay in one place too long and only put in a couple of casts in each area.
River Spinning
Rivers fish better this week with less water in them. Fishing the faster runs has produced the best fish.
Floating minnows like Rapalas have still been best in the pools, where you can toss them in and let them sit a while before retrieving.
If you can get a lure closer to the bottom you will get more strikes.

Fly Fishing LakeThe lake has been good and with the water up into the grass the biggest problem once again is the snags when you do hook a fish. Most fish this past week have been caught using Woolley Buggers or larger flies deep down if just prospect casting but if you do spot a fish it might be better to try a small nymph first. Strip the flies slowly after letting them sink to the bottom.
Craig’s Night time and Williamson’s Goldfish have been two flies well worth using at dawn and dusk.
If you sight a fish in the shallows you may be better to cast a smaller fly than a larger fly, something like a green nymph.

Fly Fishing RiversFly fishing has been better but we are still catching most fish on wet flies. Occasionally we see a fish rising to feed but with cool nights there are not so many hatches happening. A good Caddis hatch one night last week did stir the fish up the next morning, but when the sun was high the fish went deep again.
The Mowambah still is a little slow. May take a couple more weeks yet before it fires up but more on that next report after I spend a day fishing it later this week.

For visitors to the Snowy’s we have a full range of fishing tackle for hire at my shop and fishing tours are now available.
