How good are ice jigs!! That is all

Ice jigs aka balancing jigs are just another arrow in an anglers quiver. They work at times, other times are not so good. Definitely need to be a few in any bass anglers box if going to a deep lake...

Probably the most boring form of Bass angling I've tried. The Tackle Shops love it when there is an Ice Jig bite on though. I cannot for the life of me work out how some people think one jig is better than another when they are often fished by dead sticking them in front of a Bass' face. They must all look pretty much the same sitting still 30' down.

I've got some, because someone said you should have some, but for life of me I cant bring myself to park on top of a school of fish and jig. I'm not happy lure fishing unless I'm tossing them at structure. Few times I've tried it I'm hopeless at it, by the time I have sorted myself out (trust me the ice jigs are the bottom lure in the tackle bag!) I have usually drifted off the school and cant find it again!

Dropped ice jigs and everything conceivable into some bass schools at Cressy late last year... no joy... still haven't got a fish on them lol....

I love them. Caught a lot of bass using them too. I've found them excellent for schools holding in deep water. Best time I had with them was at Boondoomba. There were schools about 30ft deep, in 100+ft of water near the dam wall just away from a drop off.
I used my sounder to see my ice jig get to the exact depth, and then the ability of the jig to shoot away when you jig it, rather than moving just up and down, allowed me to cover a good area under me. Basically a large fast lift, jig shoots outwards, lower rod keeping in contact with the jig, it returns to underneath me, hold for a couple of secs, go again. May not be the most active form, but some times it's whats required. This was during a comp a few years back and a lot of other people trying to catch the same fish without much luck.
You do drop a lot of fish with these however, but I found dropping it straight back in usually ended up with a hookup. Got 20+ bass from the various schools that fishing day and I was just dropping the fish back in oops lol.
Part of my arsenal, never leave home without them, and always try them out when I find schools that don't seem too active. I think they entice a p@#%@ off bite :)

Good for when ice fishing ;)
Sweeten them with maggots for perch, fish eggs for trout or minnows for pike.

they're popular in Vic for redfin - as was/is the famous "baltic bobber" (hunk of lead with hooks covered in resin). The ice jigs look better as they do dart about a bit. Absolute snag magnets too. :)

A realy great lure, I dont get snobby about the way I fish I use all methods and enjoy them all. :thumbsup :thumbsup
44 bass and one yella on lures and shrimp yesterday and wasnt bored for a second.
