Survey on SEQ water dams.
« on: May 28, 2013, 08:59:25 AM »
I have just completed a survey on the recreational use of SEQ water dams conducted by survey company your voice.
Wanted to know how many dams you visit, what for and how often. I was only offered the survey when I was knocked back on another survey so if you are on Your Voice surveys may pay to check all surveys offered as I normally opt out once I am knocked back on one .
Attached are some screen shots of part of survey.
Wonder if they will now use the results of the survey to further delay handing down decisions.
Cheers
Ray

Could be just the cynic in me coming out again as the word that I have heard is Somerset/Wivenhoe next month followed by NPD and Kurwongbah but why go to the additional expense of conducting a survey after already going through the survey process over a period of years unless they either wish to justify decisions made or wish to further defer.

The reason that I am cynical is because on the intro page of the survey it states
" Please take care when answering the questions as they may have an impact on future SEQwater policies on recreation at dams."

I did the survey and one of the questions I got (with Maroon Dam being preferenced as my #1) was would I keep visiting the dam if a boating permit was introduced of $50/year..

That could get expensive if you need boating permits for every dam!

Pretty much do for the ones I might use my boat on (except 1), Hinze, Somerset and Nth Pine.

I got a question for NPD and Hinze asking would I continue to visit if the cost was $200 and I said no.
It would appear to me that increases in user fees may be in the pipeline.Be simple to impose coin operated boom gate at entrances.

"hy go to the additional expense of conducting a survey after already going through the survey process over a period of years unless they either wish to justify decisions made or wish to further defer."

Ray, its all to do with 'stakeholder consultation' and 'due process'
All they have to do is state they conducted a survey and these are the results, however these are the recommendations based on 'industry best practice' blah blah blah blah

They will do what ever they feel is the best for their bottom line, and damn the public!!!!

Considering the Wivenhoe review has been going for the last 5 years, I wouldn't hold my breath that they can complete NPD/Kurwongbah in 5 months.

I recommend that all Sweetwater members go and register their interest here:

Seqwater provide recreation opportunities, while protecting the region’s natural resources and water quality.

We are undertaking a Recreation Review to listen and learn about the recreational opportunities the community would like to see in and around the lakes and, within defined constraints, deliver a suite of management plans based on this feedback.

Seqwater manages all of the major water storages in South East Queensland.  These water storages provide the majority of sites in SEQ for recreation on or in freshwater. Collectively these water storages provide a recreational landscape of regional significance.

Recreation on Seqwater lakes and land must be managed in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner to ensure there are no adverse impacts on the core role of these assets – providing a safe, secure and reliable water supply.

Seqwater is the only major bulk water provider in Australia that manages ‘open’ catchments, allowing the community to enjoy lakes and catchment land while ensuring the ongoing health of catchments and the quality of the region’s water supply.

Our Recreation Management Framework identifies recreation in natural areas as a legitimate use, however not all activities can be provided for at every site, nor is it desirable to do so. Seqwater’s primary focus is to deliver safe, secure, resilient and reliable water supplies at least cost to its customers.  While we recognise that recreation is an important element of the services we provide to the community, the provision of extensive recreation facilities and services is not something we are explicitly funded for.

The review process

Commencing June 2013, we will progressively release a discussion paper for public comment for each lake and dam over the next year. Consultation around recreation activities will focus on these papers.

You can have your say through information sessions, workshops and surveys. There will also be the opportunity to provide comment online in response to the discussion points raised within the papers.

Thanks for the link Dale, I've registered. I love the dams, and having an input is great.

So a year after the release of the discussion paper but going by their previous performance it will likely be another 5 years before it actually happens.
I am certain that whatever happens we will have to pay for access as they will not provide any infrastructure unless they can generate an income stream from it.
eg Glenbawn in NSW stings you $9 per car or $110 per year for access.
At least will stop the yakkers freeloading. :)
Cheers

By doing this Ray, they will (should) have to justify why each of their dams is different.  Access fee for Hinze goes to Stocking Group, access fee for Samsonvale goes to Stocking Group, access fee for Somerset goes to SEQWater for infastructure/education, ditto for Wivenhoe, no access fee for Maroon or Moogerah, no access for some at Kurwongbah........................no sense can be made from this!

The methodology in their survey is all wrong... how are you adequately supposed to either:

Strongly agree
Agree
indifferent N/A
Disagree
Strongly disagree

to questions?

You can only agree, disagree or otherwise with statements.

Professional survey takers would know & understand this (and exploit) . It's poor engrish IMHO so I've written responses to most questions to be sure they do not mistake my responses.
