Namoi River fishing report
« on: January 25, 2011, 03:06:01 PM »
Rolled into Tamworth yesterday and rang old mate Dave Hodge, the Barefoot Fisherman. A quickly thrown together trip to the Namoi River was organised, so with canoe on roof we hit the water with around an hour of light left.

I think the first cod took about 5 casts, a rat. A couple casts later I had 15 odd pound cod follow my lure to the canoe and played up splashing and flapping all over the show but kept missing the lure.
Next it was Hodgies turn with a 10 pounder which smacked his suspender on the pause.

Based on that strike we worked longer pauses and I came up tight on a serious cod of 35 or 40 pound. The fish was beaten and we had it next to the canoe while paddling over to shallow water for some pics when it gave a big head shake and tore the lure out swimming away.

We'd been testing the new Halco Hamma suspending lure that looks more like a Barra or jack lure than a cod lure. I was initially skeptical but was happy to test them and get some promo pics for Halco.

Happy with how the Hamma worked we switched tactics, Hodgie to a spinnerbait and me to a Garra Lure -  Pondi; both caught a few.

All up we caught around a dozen cod and a golden perch, plus a couple dropped.

A great evening session with good company.

There was a mild flow in the river and the water looks good.

Well done Fitzy, sounds like an enjoyable arvo on the water.

Cheers Andrew

It all sounds like fun except the Hodgie in suspenders bit.

Got to agree with Dale. A mental image of Dave is a suspender is a bit of a stretch (pun intended)

That's a dozen more than I saw at Condamine, but things were a bit weid at the time.
