We took the kids around the back of Lake Wivenhoe yesterday, it was the daughters first time fishing for herself after practicing her casting in the year for months. She'd been fishing before but didn't want to actually fish, this time she wanted to use her own (pink) rod and try her luck.
We dropped into the Fernvale servo getting a punnet of worms and a packet of chips for the kids to eat on the way; not much change came from a lobster so I asked how much the worms were. $10 was the reply...Now I'm no tight wad, but the pitiful few woms in the plastic tub worked out to about a dollar a worm. Heck I could have bought 10 soft plastics for cheeper & had less hassle & no stinking slimey sticky fingers.
Anyhow, after losing a couple of worms, the daughter's rod bucked and she came up tight on a nice sized tilapia. The son volunteered to eat it so it went home to be filleted. The remainder of the "dollar a throw" worms were consumed by barred grunter.
For those who buy garden worms regularly, or even occasionally, is this a normal price for dozen or so average sized worms?
I'm in the wrong business I think,.................

Didn't know they sold them Garry. Always dig them up somewhere as long as there is a damp patch the yard.

The Charleton ones are 10 bucks mate, but thought they were approx 25-30 in a tub

You can always learn mate. I'm actually re-learning things as I go back to basics with the kids. Actually had snub nosed gar in mind but not one to be seen there.
Worms, I've got a great garden full of worms going but no space between the veges to dig at the moment.... Bugger the beans, tomatoes and snow peas the next time the kids want to go fishing, I'm digging them up.... :walkplank

bought worms near copeton last year from a guy with 4 teeth on the side of the road, $18 for 12 worms

I bought a tub of these worms and a bag of yabbies-$19!!! From ßervo at Esk .worms were $11.95! I nearly fell over.

What sort of yabbies were they, and where were you using them?

I have no idea except they were frozen,& about 3-4 cm long.Only reason Igrabbed them was because thats all they had in the freezer,& I thought that was all the bait they had until I asked at counter and they told me they had live worms on the shelf.Since I already paid for them I just took em.I was fishing at hamon cove.Totally new to this as name suggests. :))

Always be careful if you are buying live bait. There are laws about which yabbies you can use. Some people use Redclaw for bait, and return the small ones to the water, this is illegal in SE Qld.

They would have been frozen saltwater yabbys.
Be careful if buying feeder crays for bait from aquarium shops they invariably are juvenile redclaw.

Thanks guys .yes they were frozen and red/ orange all over from the Esk servo on the left as you head in from gatton. I only buy bait from tackle shops usually but was a last min thing and bought what was available.I'd like to know if they're illegal so Ican report them if they are.
Aussiebasser,I see you're a lake wivenhoe man.Any advice on spots/bait for land based yella fella?

Land based you are restricted to the Public Access areas. The chances of catching a yella land based at Wivenhoe are not really high. I'd go to Cormorant Bay and walk as far as I could away from the wall. I don't use bait in fresh water so I've got no recommendation for you. Live shrimp would be good, but you really should not translocate any bait alive to a lake unless you are 100% sure of the regulations. I would be throwing a 5/8oz Spinnerbait from the shore and slow rolling it back in.
